Name Change - Folklore and Superstition

My boats both had names that were dangerous. Can you see saying "This is S/V Class Act" three times in the mike? So I changed them into names that can be used. Have not noticed a change of luck.

The world runs on entropy, and it naturally wants to mess with you. Luck is another name for the future. You have a good future or a bad future, you just can't predict it. Good "luck" comes from being prepared.

Just imagine you renamed your boat, and then you promptly slipped and fell off the dock. But, you were wearing your life jacket because you didn't want to put it down on the wet dock.

Is that bad luck or good luck?

Neither. Just keep wearing your pfd. and watch where you going next time.

Being well prepared and the law of entropy - agreed 110%. Still would like to believe that the positive things I accomplish today may somehow reflect in good light tomorrow - an ability to improve my karma. Superstition in this case also pays homage to some of the greatest of people that have sailed before us, their principles and their beliefs -
And why not, it's also good old fashioned tongue-in-cheek fun, no?

In response to OP, there are no set rules on boat renaming ceremonies, nor any requirement to have one.

But just like all other forms of Woo can nonetheless be fun to participate in a bit of hocus pocus . Just make up whatever you want / draw on tradition / see what Google throws up ....hell, even me as a hardcore Atheist enjoys both Xmas and Easter Egg week , and even for both of those what wasn't snaffled from tradition / previous religions was simply made up....so you designing own boat renaming ceremony puts you in good (?!) company .

Good luck with finding a virgin though .

Of course it is pure superstition. Boat names are changed all over the world a hundred times. In racehorses you have a similar superstition - no one, or quite seldom the name of a horse will change. For legal matters, it is sometimes even impossible.

My previous boat broke up all the marriages of the respective owners, inclusive mine and the ones that followed. The bitch is 36 y/o now and again for sale due to the couples marital problems.
Unlucky? - fool yourself. Not prepared? Idem dito with star.

Speaking of ceremonies, you might contact Bill Maher, seems that Mitt Romney had his father-in-law baptised in the Mormon faith after his passing, he was an atheist. Bill came up with an original de-baptisimal proceedure to cast out any residing powers (or demons) and freed the depated for ever after. Seems something similar could be used to rid any boat from its namely beings and be renamed without future concerns.

"Jay and I sometimes contemplate the name of our next boat. Today's flavor is "Don't Panic." (Jay is a fan of Douglas Adams.)

We discussed the name, and as always, ponder how the name will sound over the VHF.

As you know, hailing over radio entails calling the hailee's name three times. So the hail is, "Don't panic; don't panic; don't panic."

Which is bad enough, but then we thought about some folks we met, who have a boat named "OK OK OK."



Picture, if y'all will, the radio hails:

Hailing them: "OK OK OK; OK OK OK; OK OK OK; Don't Panic."

Them hailing us: "Don't Panic; Don't Panic; Don't Panic; OK OK OK."

I see lots of Coast Guard visits in our future..."
