Steel Pulse and Bob Marley for me. I've asked my crew not to play the Dave Matthews Band unless I've gone overboard.

I have very catholic tastes when it comes to music and have built a considerable collection that spans the best of the 60's through todate with an equal love of classical, opera and jazz. The very best of each is in a 30mg MP3 player and goes with me to sea and is divided into sunrise, sunset, early evening, romantic dinner etc.

The original thread put the moment at night.... Therefore I believe Elgar's Nimrod would capture that moment perfectly.

Note: To enjoy...best let it load completely and then play

Buffett is verbotin on our boat - the husband hates it and I'm not a fan - but we really like listening to Martin Hayes, who plays traditional Irish fiddle music beautifully. Check out the CD Under the Moon by him if that sort of thing sounds appealing.

We also like Air, the French electronica/pop duo, for something more upbeat, and even better are the Kings of Convenience, a duo from Bergen, Norway, who make the most gorgeous music. They're often compared to Simon and Garfunkel for their melodies, but their sound is broader than that. They're great to listen to sailing and always put me in such a happy mood.

We also like some French pop, like Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy.

And when the cocktails are flowing, a little Led Zeppelin/Rolling Stones is always good.

All alone, at night, lots of stars, nice breeze, dolphins swimming near the boat....

THAT is enough music for me....my vessel swishing through the water..

For years I was a Rock and roll and Heavy metal guy, Favorites were Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin. I enjoy Jimmy Buffet and after working in the Caribbean for almost 10 years listened to a lot of all the island sounds (Soca, Reggae, etc).

My latest favorite are these guys. They play a mix of Country, gospel, techno, rock , blues, reggae and whatever else they throw in. They are the ALABAMA 3 from England, the song you may have heard them do is the opening track from the Sopranos TV show.

They are kind of different and it takes a bit for the music to grow on you. They have only been to the US a couple of times before. The full band is doing New York, Cleveland, Michigan and maybe a couple of other places starting July 1st in NYC and I'm going. They do an acoustic only version of their band too!

Anything from when I was a teenager, makes me feel younger. Plus an eclectic blend of other stuff, including U2's, "It's a beautiful day".

What about Eileen?

I can't believe no one has mentioned Eileen Quinn.

I guess it is not surprising that a cruiser would write and perform some of the best sailing music.

Jack Johnson, great music...very similar in style to Cat Stevens. Constellations off of In Between Dreams is amazing! Actually the whole album is great. Took me two years and a total change in my mindset to actually "hear" the album. Funny how that happens! So glad that after two years I put it back in my CD player!!

Sorry, didn't mean to set any restrictions on conditions I was just trying to set a quiet personal mood for you to remember your favorite.

Describe any moment when sailing and your favourites make something special.

Also You-tube attachment if you can find it

KD Lang has an amazing voice and this version alway brings out my spiritual side, (even if I am an aetheist)

What is the best musical accompaniment or song that would lift your spirits even higher and remind you of how incredibly lucky we sailors are?
Recently when all alone on night watch in the middle of the Atlantic staring at the stars (as one does) my mp3 player chose to play the theme song to American Beauty. I didn't even know I had it. I wouldn't say this is my favourite song but at that moment, at that time, the impact of the melody was utterly profound.
