Hoist breaks

It’s been 4 months since the cable on a hoist broke with my boat being lifted. The boat fell 30’ hitting a dock and sliding off into the water. The hoist is run by a city and their insurance has yet to settle a claim with me as they have offered about 50% of the replacement cost at this time. Does anyone know of a lawyer that would take such a case? All the lawyers I have contacted are injury specialists.

Re: Hoist breaks

It might help to add at least the country where it happened...If you have insurance you could ask them if they can help you.

Hello, Farallon 27,

Try Googling on "maritime lawyers", and pick one near to your location after you read the comments about them.

I'm assuming you contacted your own insurance company, first, because it usually works best to have them represent you.

Good luck with it, the whole situation seems really sad.

Ann

PS. If you add your location to your Avatar, it would be easier to make recommendations.

Re: Hoist breaks

By “Hoist” , do you mean a crane? Youtube is awash with “crane drops boat” videos and I’m sincerely sorry to hear that you’re another victim of a less than excellent lifting operation, I hope that you eventually get compensation for the loss of your boat.

Yes crane
It turns out the cable hadn’t been replaced in 2 years and 8 months

Re: Hoist breaks

The cable should not need replacing until it shows some broken strands. Our YC 2.5 Ton hoist is professionally serviced quarterly, and the service includes inspecting and lubricating the cable. The only boat drops in 50 years have been failures of the boats lifting eye or slings.

You list your location as California so there are several options, private legal action as mentioned is logical in the US, (probably not if this happened in any asian, South American or African jurisdictions) but there’s also the OSHA regulations to consider and they have considerable legal clout. I’m curious to know why your boat was raised to a height of 30’, did this happen during a re launching or simply an industrial operation?
