Registering a Dinghy necessary?

We are getting a new dinghy. Mothership is USCG registered and currently in Ft Lauderdale undergoing refit. We will be leaving the US soon and heading for the Caribbean, only occasionally returning to US waters in the future.

Do we need to register our new dinghy and slap huge black ugly letters on it! I see many dinks in the Caribbean from US motherships with no sign of registration on them at all.

Any thoughts?

Re: Registering a Dinghy necessary?

As far as I know, it depends on the laws of the state you leave for offshore from....So, if the dinghy is already stowed on deck, you may be okay when you are leaving to not have numbers on it, but if it will be used in that State, then you should do something removable about the numbers, should it be required.

While traveling what I have noticed is no. I never see registered dingys. As you know though. In the us, all boats under power have to be.
When I travel. No I wouldn’t bother. Up to how much risk you want while in countries that require it.
