Do I USCG

Hello,

I bought a boat last month. I had it registered and titled in Florida. But, now I am wanting to USCG document it. After I USCG document it, is there anything I need to bring to the state of Florida for the registration? Or, am I all*set?

Also, I need an MMSI number for my boat. I don't have an official boat name yet, because I am not USCG documented yet. Should I wait to get the MMSI number until after I get the USCG document?

I have done all of this before, but it was almost 6 years ago, and I simply can't remember the process.

Thank you!

Re: Do I USCG

For the FCC station license and MMSI the boat name doesn't have to be "official". Whatever name you intend to put on the Document application will work. The USCG will accept that name as long as it's not obscene or something like "Mayday" or "SOS", so that name will become official when the Document is issued. Lots of non-Documented boats have MMSI's, and their names are not official.

Re: Do I USCG

Your boat can't be both titled and USCG documented, so you will give up the title if you do get documentation. Plus, you don't need to show Florida numbers once you are documented, but you do need to be registered and show the Florida sticker. Not sure if you have to switch your type of registration with the state of Florida once documented.

Can a boat be both titled and documented?
No. A documented vessel may not be titled by a state. However, some states may require documented vessels to maintain their state-level registration. Regardless of registration status, all vessel owners must comply with state laws and pay applicable state taxes.

I don’t see any reason to wait: Get an “International” MMSI from the FCC, or a domestic only MMSI from Boat US.

You can update the FCC number later if you add equipment to the boat, not sure if you can add a USCG documentation #..(iIf the boat was not documented before)
