Re: 8" Bell Required ?

Most of these regs make sense.

Does anyone know how they affect non-U.S. registered boats? I understand that we need to abide by the same regs, but do we need the placards?

On board ship, we have self adhesive placcy paper notices, pretty sure laminated would keep coasties happy

On a 4000 grt UK registered ship, we have these posters displayed, and we've not even been to the USA

How are the 40' measured ?

We're 39' LOD but with a bow pulpit/anchor and a Cape Horn vane we'll be over 40'. So which one counts ?

We have the bell and the placards except the waste management plan.

Thanks,

-Sven

We're 38' LOD and 41' 6" LOA (not counting davits). USCG documentation paperwork says 38', so with the Coast Guard, marinas, and boat yards (or anyplace else I get charged by length), we're a 38 footer - Otherwise we're a 41.

The official length is measured along the boat's centerline from the foremost part of the hull to its aftermost. Bowsprits, rudders aft of the transom, swim platorms, outboard motor brackets, etc. are not part of the length unless thay are part of the hull.

Marinas have their own definitions.

Re: 8" Bell Required ?

I am going ahead and getting one. Chrome finish I think as oppose to brass cuase nothing else is brass outside the boat. But what about mounting? I want a removable one, I guess on the mizzen mast just above head level, reachable if standing on the cockpit seats? The backstay runs around there...Where else?

As I understand it, what counts is what your documents specify as your length. When I documented my boat, I made a point of documenting my LOD rather than LOA.

When I'm at the yacht club bar, however, it's all about LOA.

Re: 8" Bell Required ?

Get a nice heavy bell. It makes a much nicer tone than a thin tinkley one.
