Wood for interior/flooring (combined thread)?

Hello,

I'm planning to remove carpet and install wood flooring throughout an older catamaran. Does anyone have suggestions for alternatives to installing raw teak and 'site-finishing'? (Laminate, engineered wood, residential ideas??)

Plywood. Unless it's too cheap.

Teak faced ply and finish with teak edges.
Be careful with the laminate flooring, as much of it is not suitable for high humidity environments i.e bathrooms, never mind a boat.

Amtico vinyl flooring, you can get it in teak and holly. Used by many high end builders like Hatteras. Holds up well looks very real. No varnishing, good non skid qualities. Interior use only

I was going to suggest bamboo as well. We have friends who replaced their sole w/ bamboo. Its lovely and has held up well to regular/heavy use for 2 years. (they have young kids)

Gets my vote too for the following reasons, because we had it in a previous house. Now have cold tiles in the kitchen

a. Warm to walk on in bare feet.
b. Quiet when walked on.
c. It's tough, 3 dogs for 5 years failed to mark or chew it.
d. Withstood regular cleaning with mop and bucket.

Industrial cork -- though I like bamboo, too. It's fairly cheap, antimicrobial, has a bit of give to it and is durable. Oh, and it insulates pretty well.

Any progress here Erik & Rachel ? We are trying to do the same thing with our catamaran (replace the carpet in the salon). I like both cork and bamboo but with cork worry about denting it (we have a chair on wheels at the nav. ) and with the bamboo, it is backed with ply and not sure how well it would hold up to the marine environment. i would love to hear more from people who have done either of these and if they used the standard (Lowes or HD) off the shelf stuff or bought "marine grade".

There is an article in Good Old Boat, Issue 77 March/April 2011 on doing a cabin sole replacement. They bought teak and holly veneer from NuTeak and applied it over subfloor they constructed out of plywood. Got to say, at least the pictures look pretty good.

i second the vinyl plank flooring am looking at putting in im my boat this year after seeing it on a couple of new boats looks great virtually no maintenance

i will agree on the bamboo .. very tough stuff and looks great. but the teak and holly plywood is also good .. be sure to finish with many coats of varnish. good luck.

Seen this done many times on boats over wintering in Mainas in Spain etc... a sheet of oak/holly then lift your floor and use pieces for your pattern... works a treat... not difficult to do either...

/regarding Amtico ---Has anyone found a retailer willing to sell the small quantities neede to do a boat?
