Water System Problem

I discovered a broken water line this weekend. apparently the stem on a check valve on the main feed at the top of the water tank broke off.

The valve itself seemed to be OK, so I shoved it down the line a bit and installed a PVC connector to repair the join. BUT, keep getting major air in the line. I also tried taking the check valve out (why exactly is it there, anyway?) but the same thing.

Perhaps it's the pump itself, but it would seem damn coincidental for
this break in the line to occur at exactly the same time the pump decided to self-destruct.
Any thoughts?

Just a thought, did you check if there is water in the tank?

Yes! It's full. Sorry, should have mentioned that.
