Volvo Penta 280 stern drive shift cables

Has anyone replaced shift cables on the above stern drives?
Mine needs replacement and I wondered if it's a job best left to the mechanic at considerable cost or us it owner doable?
Any advice is more than welcome I can have it slipped if needs be.

Re: Volvo Penta 280 stern drive shift cables

I was about to tackle that job on my DP 290 outdrive when I sold the boat. I kept all the service manuals in digital format. I'm not sure how much the 280 differs from the 290 but I imagine shift cables would be near identical. The manuals are posted here for download.

Good luck with your project.

Re: Volvo Penta 280 stern drive shift cables

As it turned out it was not the shift cables binding at all but the shift control levers itself were faulty. The previous owner must have tried something and put it back together incorrectly. How annoying! Some people should be banned from owning boats I swear!
Hope this can help someone else!

Moving the Shift levers you could swear the cable is binding.
One don't think of trying to move the leavers after disconnecting the control cable because after disconnecting one just try to move the cable using pliers. You can't move cables by hand easily because there is a lot of leverage in the shift control levers itself (around 5:1)
We fixed the shift assembly and she is like new!

Unfortunately by then I've already replaced the shift cables at great cost so the whole darn thing is now sensational!
