Velvet Drive Challenge

Hello folks,

Looking for some “how do I take this apart?” assistance.

Have an old Borg Warner transmission hooked up to my 33 hp Westerbeke.

I have developed a serious fluid leak where the shift mechanism enters the case. I have been old that a 50 cent O Ring will fix the leak.

So, I take the shifter lever off and the neutral check switch but can’t seem to puzzle out how to pull the actual “arm” that goes into the transmission to change direction of the tranny.

Does it pull or need to be drifted out?

Any help or guidance would be most appreciated!

Many thanks.

Re: Velvet Drive Challenge

I strongly advise you to do a search on something like Borg Warner Velvet Drove 71 72 transmission workshop manual

You'll get a whole lot of Service Manuals and Owners Manual which probably wouldn't be much help but you might get lucky.

Here's a start.

Re: Velvet Drive Challenge

Your Borg Warner is a " 1000 series" 10-23. Removing the selector valve seemingly requires the removal of a retainer pin first, and the pin is only accessible by removing the gear case.
I never post a response to an engine or gearbox thread unless I've actually worked on the machinery under discussion but on this occasion ..... I only have the service manual and no hands on experience ....so hopefully this screen shot/s will help clarify the situationClick image for larger version

Re: Velvet Drive Challenge

I did that about 4 months ago.

The valve is connected to the bolt on the shift lever.

Unscrew the bolt holding the shift lever tight on the port side, making sure to catch the dent ball as it will drop straight out..

Tap the threaded end (on the port side) and the valve will pop out the stbd side.
Yes, there is an o-ring thst needs to be replaced. The valve may have to be cleaned. Velvet drive shop manuals are easily pulled off the internet. It would be a good idea to review the one for your model.
