Sonic Anti-fouling - Learning Mode

My 53’ Navigator is going in for a bottom job next week and I just learned about these devices. Does anyone have experience with them? They sound great!

Here are a couple of links.

So with your experience they don't work?

I met a guy who had a boat next to him with one, and he said it worked great.

You might check out SV Delos on youtube. They installed one and reported on it.

Re: Sonic Anti-fouling - Learning Mode

Saw this the other day and thought it was interesting.

https://encrypted-vtbn1.gstatic.com/...K-LgJ9f9kzz7W3

Found a review, https://www.mby.com/maintenance/fins...tenance-107759.

The company's website is, https://www.finsulate.com/en/.

The product is basically a wrap with texture to minimize growth.
Quote:
Product construction Self adhesive wrap consisting of backing paper, pressure sensitive adhesive, carrier film and antifouling layer: - Backing: siliconized paper - Pressure sensitive adhesive: modified acrylic - Carrier film: polyester film - Antifouling layer: cured acrylic adhesive with embedded nylon fibers
It will be interesting to see if it survives in the market place. Sounds interesting.

Later,
Dan

Unfortunately, they applied a super slippery coat of bottom paint at the same time so their results are bound to be skewed.

Re: Sonic Anti-fouling - Learning Mode

I have sonic anti-fouling. Four transducers. Bow, stern, port and starboard mid-beam.
I removed all old anti-fouling paint then applied two coats of scrubbable hard racing anti-fouling paint.
My boat is a 41’6” Westerly Oceanlord.
90% of barnacle growth has been eliminated.
For me it works.
When I can afford it I’ll remove the anti-fouling paint and apply copper coat.
I think I’ll then be 100% barnacle free.
And non-polluting.

Not a big success on Delos. And they didn't seem to report on energy consumption.

Re: Sonic Anti-fouling - Learning Mode

I have three devices on a 29 ft boat that sits in FL water 12 months a year. I cannot say anything great or bad. The idea was to stretch out the bottom jobs. Have not idea if it is working. I did notice that it did consume more power than I like. I have completely stopped plugging into shore power which causes me to turn on the device less.

Re: Sonic Anti-fouling - Learning Mode

I'm using Vivd anti-fouling it is very good, My boat is 50’ build from Aluminium, which is good for ultrasonic transducer signal transmition. After some research I found store bought Ultrasonic units of poor quality, whereby they overpromise and Under deliver.

I installed a heavy-duty ultrasonic 2 transducers custom designed by a NZ electronics fellow, Eric Bretscher, owner of Nordkyn Design, test his invention on his sail boat. You should visit his website, there are some very good articles on his experiences and electronic solutions.

Featured Articles | Nordkyn Design .

I installed two of his Ultrasonic transducers a year ago, I found the hard shell Barnacles my Bay is known to be a problem, so far none have no hard shell or barnacle grown at all. It is not perfect solution, as I still get slim and weed around the waterline, I have a diver clean the bottom every 3 months. For him the scrubbing job is so much easier than it used to be. To sum-up my impression, in my experience so far. I will get one year for sure and possibly two extra years without having to slip and anti-foul the bottom. As all boat owners would know, the slipping and painting saving are significant as it will more than pay for its self.

PS if you install an Ultrasonic unit, I found you need an off and on switch when cleaning the boat's bottom, and also my HF radio gets chirping feed back when the ultrasonic unit is switched on.
Good luck with your research in this interesting topic.
