Old Halyards

What do you do with old tired halyards? 5/8 line X 3 100 ft each

Re: Old Halyards

Strip the core from the cover, and use lengths of cover for sail ties. You can use the core to tie things down on your car roof racks, or as all sort of utility line.

Freecycle. A sailor with less money will know what they are for.

Re: Old Halyards

I'm curious: do you really have 5/8 inch halyards on a 38 foot ketch? GAdzooks!

I stand corrected. They are all swollen to some degree. The sheaves are for 1/2 inch. Quite a bit cheaper. I tried washing them, but bad is bad.

One confusing thing is most chandlers sell 12 mm not 12.5. Should this be a concern? Full 1/2 inch line is more limited in colour selection.

Re: Old Halyards

Given that the old ones swelled, and the new ones eventually will too, getting less than 1/2" is ideal. I use 7/16ths halyards to ensure they'll fit well in my 1/2" sheaves. Unless you're doing something crazy, 7/16" double braid is more than strong enough for your boat.

FWIW, we went to 10 mm spectra core dacron cover halyards long ago, and have found them long lived and satisfactory in all ways... on sails that are quite a bit larger than yours (I think). Advantages are less stretch and less friction than their 12 mm double braid dacron predecessors. And because of the size reduction, not much more expensive.
