Engine water pump making me crazy.

Got a brand new pump for my dinosaur, but have yet to get a drop out of it. Strainer is clear, new hoses, no obstructions.

An impeller pump needs no prime, and will pump from either direction, right? Or is it possible to install it incorrectly? Didn't think mattered, but l must be wrong.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Engine water pump making me crazy.

I will announce the last time I had this issue, I had the pump on upside down. With fittings on opposite sides it is easy to do...
Yes, there is a IN and a OUT, and usually not marked in case it mounts to a reverse direction motor.

Prime it anyways if you can, and also lube it with silicone grease for those few seconds running dry if you can't prime it.

Re: Engine water pump making me crazy.

It’s directional in relationship to how it’s driven. But yes, it can be driven in either direction. Your belt or gear drive determines the direction.

Gonna ask th dumb question.

Did you get the supply hose on the proper side of the pump?

Ie are you trying to suck from the exhaust side...

Is the new water pump">raw water pump for your 2QM? If so, here’s a short list of possibilities
A. Cover plate gasket too thick
B. No impeller key.
C. No impeller, incorrect impeller or the impeller was greased for storage and has now shed its blades
D. Missing or loose cam
E. Tang drive missing or slipping in the drive gear.
F. Engine cooling system blocked so there’s no exit for the sea water
G. Suction leak on intake side.
Without knowing more about your installation, it’s hard to pin down the exact cause.

Re: Engine water pump making me crazy.

Just to make sure you you have the pump installed and plumbed correctly, the water takes the LONG WAY AROUND the pump body. The first time I tried hooking one up I thought it went the other way, and sure enough, it didn't work. Also. If you're using the blue "run dry" impeller, I've tried four different ones on four different engines. None of them would pump water. All the pumps worked fine with the standard black rubber impellers.
