Replacing pitted Volvo gauge bevels

The chrome finish on the plastic bevels of our Volvo Penta D2-40 gauges has pitted. Has anyone had the same issue and managed to fix with simple DIY solution? I can’t figure out how to remove just the bevel so I could spray paint it with a chrome finish enamel. It seems crimped on, though I can turn it. As its plastic, I don’t want to damage it while removing.
