Thank you all for excellent suggestions and information. I agree with Wanderlust--from the photo it looks like the top thread is left hand, so I was actually tightening the elbow when I was trying to take it off. Seems like the universal advice is to remove the whole assembly, put it in a vise, and liberally apply heat and brute force. However, I think I'll defer it to the end of the sailing season.
