Raw water pump screws
Hi all
I’m looking to change the screws I. The back of the water pump">raw water pump they are a Phillips head. I wonder if anyone has found them with a bolt head as this would be easier at sea to use. It’s number 15 in. The attached photo

Re: Raw water pump screws
my westerbeke pump has hex heads on the cover plate. you get an extra one with the new impeller. seems like a west marine or hardware store would have these.

Re: Raw water pump screws
They are standard machine screws, not magic water pump cover screws. Once you figure out what size they are the rest is easy...
You just replace them with whatever flavor head suits your fancy. You can even get them as knurled thumbscrews if you look hard enough.

Hi, outdoortony, if you would add your general location to your avatar, we could tune our answers to your location.
In our neck of the woods, there are nuts and bolts stores, dealing in fasteners and associated goods, even thumb screws and Robertson screws (the ones with square holes), both of which are easy to use in a seaway. At a West store, you'll pay top dollar for screws.

Re: Raw water pump screws
Those screws are bronze. Be careful what you use. Brass or stainless should be OK. Nothing else or you will have serious problems the next time you take it apart.

Re: Raw water pump screws
Take one of the screws with you and match it. The threads have to have the same pitch, and the diameters match; plus, the lengths should be the same, or they won't tighten properly.

Re: Raw water pump screws
Most likely will be a metric size. Look on the index for that parts diagram you posted. On the list-out of parts, that number 15 will likely be described, something like "M3" (meaning 3 mm diameter) x 6 (meaning 6 mm length... or something like that. Likely be easier to find in stainless than in bronze, but either will do. Not a high stress application!

I long ago changed mine from the crew head to hex head on my Yanmar 4JH3E. They were just standard metric threads
I got a new impeller last month and now it is only available as a "kit" that includes new bolts with hex heads.
BTW - those are bolts not screws

Actually, I'm about 95% sure they are screws. Most water pump covers are held on with fasteners that are fully threaded with Philips heads, and those are "machine screws."
I have seen some people differentiate between a machine screw and a machine bolt, or a machine bolt has a hex head.
If the water pump fastener has a shank, and unthreaded part between the head and the threads, then it would indeed be a bolt.
Google "machine screw" and see if that looks like what holds your water pump cover on. Then see if you can find a Phillips head bolt.
And to the OP's question, on my last boat I replaced the fasteners with SS Allen head, it was an almost impossible place to reach and the Allen head seemed to provide a more positive engagement when removing them. I haven't made the change on my current boat yet, as it is easier to reach.

Re: Raw water pump screws
When I need a very specific fastener I usually get it from www.mcmaster.com.
Don't think they do bronze though, boltdepot.com has silicon bronze i believe.
