I'd be interested in hearing your opinion about Alameda.

Re: Putter, Putt-Putt

It's about 32 nautical miles from Pillar Point (Half Moon Bay's marina) to Grand Marina in Alameda - the furthest away marina. There's VHF weather and Coast Guard and BoatUS Towing service (or some other) and a whole lot of other vessel traffic. I believe you will be just fine and if not there is a lot of help around.
Since I hate to motor, I have been known to actually sail that route - several times. Watch for favorable tides at Golden Gate... and don't cut the corner too close at the shipping channel...

OK guys. The West Coast can be hostile, but it's maybe something like only a 40-mile voyage (if that). But you may want to check the weather and sea state first. Tonight is unseasonably cool (like much this summer), and there are strong winds even 35 miles inland.

Re: Putter, Putt-Putt

October is usually calm, and sunny compared to it's summer days. I would think fuel woould be the only issue at this point. Have fun, and enjoy the sights along the ride. I don't know how many times I have gone under the G.G., and always find it a thrill........i2f

Re: Putter, Putt-Putt

well... after 10 years without moving, in the low predawn light, i fired up the diesel, untied the lines and push off, motored out the the slip for the 1st time in 10 years.

4 hours later i turned east into the channel and headed thru the golden gate, passed alcatraz, under the bay bridge and up to nelsons boat yard.

i was stoked to find that the bottom is mostly 'gunk' free and the per-purchase dive proved accurate with virtual zero blistering (the handful of blisters are smaller than a fingertip).

thanks for all the advice.

Re: Putter, Putt-Putt

zee, the 1st 3 minutes and then the anxiousness swelled back up once i realized we were committed and is she died the tides (and rocks) would not treat me nicely (regardless of how charming i am) and again when the tanker started closing on me as i know if she was gonna quit... it would b in front of a tanker (surely god is gonna to punish me for my childhood sooner or later).

all in all, an excellent trip and reminds me that motoring is only fun in a donzi and boats are made for sailing.
