Prostate Exam of a Yanmar 1GM10

Yes I spent my afternoon with my finger in the rectum of my 1GM10.

I read quite a few posts where it was recomended to check the mixing elbow and replace after 500 hours. I decided it was time.

I have quite a bit of space around the engine. I went to work draining the water muffler and then removing the exhaust hose from the elbow.
Inside the hose was a loose metal pipe. WTF? was my thought.

I managed to remove the hose and pulled out the tube. It seemed to be corroded and broken at one end. I was able to get my head around and look up into the elbow. Looked fine on the inside no carbon.... but what was the tube.

I decided to remove the elbow... replacing a gasket never costs to much. It came off easy. Then I realized that the pipe that was in the exhaust hose was the inner sleeve of the elbow.

So now its time to buy a new exhaust elbow.

The exhaust elbow connects directly to the head on a 1GM10. It was caked with carbon. In order not to damage the head, I spent the afternoon carefully scraping the carbon and brushing it out with my finger. (I didn't want to chip carbon into the cylinder)

How carefull do I need to be? I can see the exhaust valve stem.

I would like to get a drill with a wire brush/wheel on it and clean it out. I dont want to remove the head. I don't want to damage the exhaust valve or knock carbon into the cylinder. Should I be concerened?

Oh and by the way where is a good Yanmar Dealer online that will ship to Vancouver. Yanmar parts cost a fortune up here compared to the States.

Well there is really no way of telling if that valve is open or closed without removing the valve cover unless you roll the engine over by hand if you can... and watch the valve..in Lu of that put a pointy shop vac attachment on and scrape away as carefully as you can I guess trying to keep a good suction going. The part your looking at should be low enough on the valve stem not to be too concerned about scratching it..but I would not go wild .

suggest going to a fabricator much cheaper than oem. Turn engine untill t.d.c. comp stroke,valves will be closed ,you will then be able to scrap or use rotary brush being aware of valve stem .Use a short piece of hose to mouth blow particles out.wipe any residue from stem before lubricating.Use this system quite often on various engines.

Thanks for the replies. I can see when the valve is open as its clean on part of the stem.

I agree about trying to get Yanmar parts here in Vancouver.
Check on ebay. I got an elbow for my 2gm for $90 and had it shipped to Point Roberts for pickup.

Not 100% sure but I think its 128170-13530. I have it at home.

I'm in luck. A workmate from CA is flying up next week. The marina near his house has one for a $149 US. I'll save a bundle at $284 here. With the Canadian $ at par it seems unjustified to pay almost double. I bet ya its cheaper in Alaska then Vancouver.
