PERKINS 80 HP Starter Motor problem ...

Hello,

I have recently bought a 12m boat with a PERKINS 80HP DEISEL ENGINE

The ENGINE TYPE No. is BB 80680 U 688355 Y

Unfortunately the starter mortor had been taken out and dismatled.

On inspection I find that two od the four magnets are broken.

I have asked locally if the unit can be repaired, but they say it is better to buy a new starter motor.

I am having trouble finding a replacement. The engine is only 4 years old ( but I think it was instock for a couple of years - so its really more like 7 years old ).
Even so - I would have thought that getting a strater motor shouldn't be difficult but my local suppliers have not been able to order it for me.

Can anyone help me - wher is the best place to find a replacement starter ?

DETAILS
The label on the starter motor has this number on it: 26912J
It is 12v starter motor type: M80R ( 1.7 )
The part number is : 2873B060
It is made by Magnet Marelli

Many thanks
David.

There are several aftermarket starters available and chances are, someone may have spares lying around for yours. As Pat said, where are you so we can better help.

If you have connections in the UK. I'd get them to walk into a perkins shop and get/order one.

There's an outfit out of Italy that has a HUGE inventory of Perkins parts. Can't remember the name, but they claim to be the largest Perkins parts dealer on the web. Google them. Also go2marine does a huge mailorder business, and carries a lot of Perkins parts. I believe they are in the US, though. The Italian outfit should be the cheapest/quickest for you where you're located.
Good luck

Just wondering,

Is any Cruisers Forum member in the UK and close to a Perkins Dealer?
Or in regular contact with someone that orders from them ?

If so could you PLEASE ask about my starter motor.
The quotes I am getting from here (Turkey) are ridiculously expensive.

DETAILS
The label on the starter motor has this number on it: 26912J

It is 12v starter motor type: M80R ( 1.7 )
The part number is : 2873B060
It is made by Magnet Marelli

Actually it doesn't have to be a genuine Perkins but it needs to fit the
PERKINS 80HP DEISEL ENGINE that I have in my boat.

The ENGINE TYPE No. is BB 80680 U 688355 Y

I do hope that someone can help! I am working on the boat myself and need to keep my costs down so any help from old-hands would be most appreciated

Thanks again,
David.

Hi David,
These guys are in Italy and might be more convenient/cheaper. I've never dealt with them, but they have a lot of parts. Probably worth a call. They could surface ship to Athens, & then Athens to Izmir would be quick. And cheap, or you could ferry over & pick it up there. At any rate, here's their website.

perkins parts, perkins engine parts, perkins spare parts, perkins powerparts

Good Luck

Thanks for the link.

They did give me a quote but much more than I a thought
-- 1000 Euros plus shipping.

I was expecting to pay about 250 - 300 Euros for a new one.

Anyway, I'll keep looking

Lucas and a couple of others make aftermarket units. And yes, I would be expecting 300 E's. A brand new CAV?(genuine article) unit was NZ$2500 and a brand new aftermarket was NZ$1000. Not exactly sure where the euro is against our dollar at the mo, but we are 34British pence to our dollar...ruffly.
