Some of you may remember my E40 sunk at the slip beginning of may. Electrolysis of the stbd head thru hull. Boat bottomed out in 6.5 feet of water and bow down, but the perkins was under water. The alternator, starter are hosed, and salt water is in the engine.
I don't have the cash for a replacement engine, so a rebuild is in the future.
I could try to just flush it out, after new starter and alternator, but of course my local engine guy does not recommend that, and I would like the peace of mind that rebuild would bring. Also it will allow me to spruce up the engine space, all new insulation, replace the fuel tank ( that I just repaired but has water sitting in it for 3 months now.... why that long is a hard story... just know that marina's contractor yards only suck).
So I need a good place to send it to. My local wants to send it to Houston, and that may be fine, but he won't give me a estimate and that just makes me not want to use him.
Anyone do a rebuild on the engine and if so where did you send it out to?
What in addition to the engine should I consider replacing?
I want to upgrade the alternator to a 150 amp balmar so I would need a larger pulley. Which one? Serpentine or dual 3/8"? New panel? What about the heat exchanger?
When the engine is rebuilt, what should I ask for or insist is done.
Lastly, how much should I expect to pay for this. I was told roughly 6K but that is a guestimate.

Have you called TransAtlantic Diesel/ (See TAD for perkins 4.108 engines, perkins 4.108 diesel, perkins 4.108 marine, perkins diesel engines, perkins marine )

I would suggest you stay away from Foley, Kraft power in NY was very professional for our recent Perkins 4.108 rebuild.

I'm sending mine to a childhood friend who has had a machine shop and has been rebuilding engines for 30 years. He's semi retired now but has agreed to do mine. Wouldn't trust anyone else to bring the engine to the factory clearances and not just inside service limits. There's a big difference.

I found 4 or 5 Perkins centers in Corpus/Houston area.

Or Try TAD...shipping might not be too bad

The Perkins were used extensively for everything from forklifts to irrigation pumps and gen sets. To get the basic long block rebuilt there should be a lot of options. Another option is to look on line for one that is already rebuilt. This place has them for $3800 in stock. Perkins Pacific. I bought the serpentine kit from TA diesel.But save your money on the Balmar and buy a 110 amp leece neville $270.00 easy on your engine.Plentey of amps external regulator adjustable.Wired right to my house bank.All the power you need and you can switch it on or off.

Yea, the Leece Neville are HEAVY Duty. The serpentine is a good idea, vee belts suck over 100 amps.

Most of the leese neville are not marine alternators. Which model did you use?

That link is for a small case alternator. The real robust Leece Nevilles are large case like the ones that used to be used on Kenworth Trucks etc.. see the one in the pic.
