I'm not sure how worried I should be about this corrosion. This is the $100 flange that attaches to my $1500 exhaust manifold on my Universal M25XP engine. Both parts would beed to be replaced to fix it. Surveyor didn't mention it. An elbow attaches to this and goes to another corroded chunk of metal. For all I know, this could have years of life left in it.

I'd be concerned... the results of a failure could lead to a disaster. Doesn't look good to me

got wire brush? got mechanic?? things donot need to cost the prices you quoted--try a radiator or fabrication shop. you may be surprised.
your special hose looks as if it will pose a problem sooner than later--might wanna replace that, too--and while you are at it, for peace of mind, you may wish to spring for the price of an overhaul just to make sure you have a reliable engine.

Having suffered from an exhaust riser failure myself in the icw I'd pull it before it falls off. Yank the whole manifold and clean it all up.

Disassemble, rust off. Check what is left. Weld where required

I would take it apart and clean it up to see what you've got. While it looks pretty bad it's hard to tell until you get it cleaned up. It could be near failure, or it might have some time left. You won't know which just by looking at it.

Re: Is this as bad as it looks?

Were does that water drip come from? looks like its been dripping for a while.

If you can get off the engine into a workshop it would b much easier to take apart and examine properly. I take its the exhaust coming off the exhaust manifold, not something you want to fracture in a busy seaway leaving hot saltwater and exhaust fumes filling up the boat.

You know it will nag you, so take it and inspect it.

Exactly. May need a long soak in PB Blaster followed by an impact wrench to take it off.

Where did the water that caused the rust come from? Condensation? Drip from above? Splashing from stuffing box below? Leaks in the engine cooling circuit? Etc.

Re: Is this as bad as it looks?

BTW speaking of that asbestos insulation in the photo. My marine pro buddy had that exhaust pipe rust out and fail on him in the middle of a trip with all the consequences (luckily not catastrophic for him). He attributed the excessive rust on condensation due to the covering not being breathable. Subsequently he took the asbestos covering off and used some kind of mesh material to act both as heat dissipator and breather for condensation. He advised me to check regularly on that cover to see if any rust is developing and deal with it accordingly. According to him the only reason it is there is to keep the engine room from overheating. So if you can achieve that by some other means, a small fan which would turn on with the engine or some such, it can be dispensed with. Otherwise one needs to be vigilant re: rust on that pipe under the covering.

His other suggestion was as an alternative to make a heat resistant carbon pipe as a replacement.

Yikes! Worse than it looks! I'd be afraid to motor out of the slip... in fact, I'd be afraid to be in the slip. Get that thing outa the water and off the boat!

Re: Is this as bad as it looks?

Answer: yes.
Take it off and you may or may not have to start again.
If you don't do this at a time of your choosing, it will detach at a time of its choosing......
