Where I am, you would never haul a boat for something as simple as removing a prop. Why would you do that when there are many dozens of divers available with the skills and tools to do it underwater? The OP is obviously in an area where in-water maintenance is the norm and the yard knows that there is no reason to haul the boat. They're just looking to pad their pockets.

Budgeting is fine but it's just a guess. You have no prop so your choice is to either buy a new prop using money that's not in your "budget" or let the boat sit unused until next year's budget kicks in.

My suggestion - buy a prop.

Different strokes, I guess.

I don’t let others do work on my boat, with limited exceptions. I dive, but the conditions where I keep my boat are so dismal (visibility is garbage, ******** plowing through the mooring field creating wake) that I prefer to haul the boat for something like that. A prop can be done quickly, in the slings, and allows for me to do a better inspection.

In good conditions, clear water? I’d probably do it in water.

When it comes to underwater work, DIYers are the rare exception.

Checking out a used prop is just routine, before installation, and $150 is about the going price for that procedure.

Pulling a shaft, and coupler, to check for runout or fit is not.

One requires that you go to a shop hand it off and wait for the work to be done.

The other that you haul, remove the shaft, roll it and check for runout, possibly replace the coupler cause it's old and you pressed it out somehow, possibly replace the cutlass bearing, and check the engine alignment in vitro, after reassembly.

So, I agree with fstbttms, just need to check the prop out first before installation.

How else would one know the true diameter, pitch, of a prop found on eBay.
It may have the stamped pitch and dia. on it however, it can be out of whack.

Props can be changed out in vitro, bigger boats may require a haul for this.
My diver does both but the props can be difficult to place on the shaft if they are big.

Just another busy day for the hull cleaners in the land of megayachts. Those guys down there pull props in the 40”-50” range off of boats over 100’ LOA all the time. The one in the pic came off of a 75-footer.

Like I said, there is pretty much no reason that a boat has to be hauled for a prop R&R.

I think you're just seeing bent blades. This kind of thing happens almost daily in south Florida. Big boats + shallow water = $$$ for divers

Re: I lost my prop....

Thanks for the pics, FB. Bent props are kind of interesting. Especially the big ones. Must be a lot of rocks around there, just waiting for the inattentive pilot.

TY,

Ann

Not rocks so much as sand in shallow water.
