Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

Obi Wan,

I think the price for damper plate was around $175, not sure.

I bought it from Clutch and Powertrain in mobile, Clutches, Driveshafts, Diferentials, Axles

Call Alto
Alto: Contact Us

and they will tell you the closest reseller in Niceville.

Just beware of the warp problem I had to overcome (see my earlier post). You might or might not have that problem.

Tightening the damper plate hexhead machien screws through the hole in the bell housign is a lot easier with a special tool I made. I welded the long part of a 4mm allen wrench to a long screw driver. Make sure the screw driver is long enough so you can clear the gear box and can make full revolutions without raking your knuckles on the gear box.

Hurst Transmission Rebuild

Nothing a big enough hammer can't fix, right? ; )

Looks like the closest reseller is in Pensacola.

Obi Wan:
I've heard some people have had issues with the ALTA damper plate (see previous posts on this thread for one...). Therefore I went with the Sachs unit, Federal marine sold it to me for $199. Call Jim at 708-352-2200. He has a wealth of info on this stuff!

https://youtu.be/GSgWi-XUbNM - this is a rebuild of a Hurth HBW10 - I am having mine rebuilt at the moment. It's reasonably easy fix

Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

Hey thanks for the post Aloha! We just got great news ourselves today...Fed Ex just delivered the complete rebuild kit for our HBW-50. Original ZF product too! As previously mentioned here we've heard some negative comments regarding the ALTA product, so we opted to spend the extra $$$ on factory parts. So... may we ask who is doing your rebuild and what parts are you/they using?

Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

My transmission is being rebuilt by Anthony-Keats Marine in Wheatly, ON. To my knowledge, they are using OEM parts but I will ask when they call with diagnosis. I dropped the unit off on Tuesday so will know more next week sometime. It was a small shop that specializes in this.

Anthony Keats Marine

It is a flat rate CAD $350 + parts. we will see what comes of it. I am contemplating a new damper plate just because it's old and I have it apart. I am installing a new PSS dripless while we are at it.

Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

Yes, I (and many others!) agree that it'd be best to replace the damper while you're there. Thanks for the link to Anthony Keats... look forward to hearing how you made out.
BTW, what's the reason for rebuild? Was it slipping?

Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

The transmission was slow to engage in forward gear. I bought this boat fall 2015 and refit it to launch spring 2016. You can find my work in Facebook - just search for Tartan 33.

I only have a few small items left to do - transmission rebuild, PSS dripless install, new bearing, Bimini and some interior wood finishing.

Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

OMG!!! I screwed up royally! I just noticed it's HURTH, not HURST (as in the castle in California).
I'm just viewing the youtube video; great job by that guy!
Keeping my fingers crossed that I can pull this off...

Re: Hurst Transmission Rebuild

An interesting thing came up on that youTube video. The guy said the thrust washer was worn down. Even though he doesn't measure it, it's pretty obvious in the video. Maybe that's the weak link that causes the slippage in forward gear?
Funny: both a rebuilder here in NJ and Federal Marine said the ALTA thrust washers are "crap". Just sayin'...
