Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
wow! lotsa answers...we have a noverania rib 10.5, had a 2 cycle 98 merc, with the shift on the tiller! more problems than i care to discuss, sold it, and picked up an 02, 9.9 yamaha off craigs, put on fins, starts everytime, gas mix is 100/1, very little smoke! we always use non-ethenol fuel [in everything] they can keep their 4 strokes!...sits all winter, starts in the spring with one or two pulls!...clyde

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
I have a Merc 9.9 4 stroke on a 10' Brig RIB with the old style pointy tubes. Had to put fins on it to plane with 2 people. Still won't with 3 people. The difference between the 9.9 and the 15hp is carburation apparently and I would recommend that. I find the 4 stroke very inconvenient and heavy when storing for a passage. I would do a Yamaha Enduro (2 stroke) if possible, readily available outside of Canada and the U.S. if you can persevere with what you've got till your south.

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
Are you aware that the 9.9 HP Nissan and Mercury 4 strokes are rebranded Tohatsu's? As for planning, that all depends on rib style, weight and load. If you really needed 20HP up til now, then I don't know how 1/2 the HP is going to do it.

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
In the end you just have to choose. If the 9.9 gets you up on lane 95% of the time but doesn't when you have guests.. not a big deal maybe....

Not enough power. Get at least a 15 hp.

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
Hi,
Patty and I have a 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke. We bought a 350 West Marine RIB with the flat floor (bit heavier) and we had some tripidations about planing with the engine we owned. Good News the 9.9 without Doel Fins (installing them today) will plane with two of us and full tank of fuel. You will not believe the fuel economy this engine doesn't use fuel like any engine I have ever used. Great fuel economy and really really at half speed.

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
Here are my personal experiences - West Marine 310 RIB with a 2005 Mercury 9.9 four stroke engine with fins and 3 gallons of fuel:
#1 - Me (220lbs), wife (110lbs), 8 y/o (55lbs), 10 y/o (68lbs) = planes after a few moments.
#2 - Me (220lbs), wife (110lbs), wife's friend (165lbs) = planes after a few moments.
#3 - Me (220lbs), wife (110lbs), wife's friend (165lbs), friends husband (195lbs) = will not plane but displaces pretty well.
#4 - Me (220lbs), 8 y/o (55lbs), 10 y/o (68lbs) = planes immediately.

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
just bought a WM 11.5 RIB-350 (161 lbs) for my Hunter 460. Have been looking at a 2012 Mercury 9.9 to power it. Am I fooling myself? Need to get 4 adults on plane plus assorted gas/water/crap...

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
My 10 foot rib with a Tohatsu 9.8 weighs a about 200lbs full of fuel. And at WOT you have to hang on with two people in it. Planed with me and 300 ft of chain. So I might be jaded, but it is fun.

You'll need more HP. At least 15

Re: 9.9 hp on 10' inflatible
Spend a little time in the Bahamas where speed and torque are really desirable,
And you wouldn't consider using anything smaller than a Yahama 15hp 2-stroke IMHO.

You'll need a bigger motor......... unless the four adults are all less then 85lb each.

I'm thinkin (that's a heavy RIB!):
161# RIB
100#++ lb engine
550# 4 Adults
39 lb misc.
total= yep abut 850 lbs!

I agree with Cheechako, you will need mor H.P. but I think the 9,9 Mercury works well for me. Easy to get aboard and doesn't use much fuel.
