The vibe of it

Well where is cat design going, for some years I felt the condo nick name was a bit harsh however after studying the latest batch of offerings I am starting to wonder, have a look at the FP45, the Leopard 45, the Lagoon 46, they can compete with the best condo’s in the world, the Admiral just gushes over the décor, the colours, the mood lighting, particularly the underwater lighting, I mean the thing will likely sink unless it has underwater lighting, how many taps has it got? but hey how many day beds has it got, some upstairs, some downstairs, what colour is the toilet seat, is the seat heated, it better have a TV in there, we must have wall to wall carpet dear, OK darling, you know the story a happy wife is a happy life. What about toilets (heads) the Admiral wants to know why they can’t call them powder rooms! I feel the marketing folk are in a competition to see how many bums they can seat, I mean give me a break, has it got a sail well who the hell cares, it’s all about the vibe of it. I am going to stay with my Mirror sailing dinghy, my first love.

Re: The vibe of it

Great post ! You nailed it.

BTW, there's a Leopard 40 running around in the PNW (charter) named "Coastal Cottage".

Every single time I've run across it, it's motoring.

Were heated toilet seats an option? Bugger, why did nobody tell me?

Re: The vibe of it

Don’t get it why it would be something bad with comfort while sailing?
I had a Nacra18, good fun and fast as hell for a couple of hours. But not the boat I’m keen to spend months on :0

Unfortunately style has completely superseded practicality and safety.

These square cornered Ikea interiors are actually dangerous at sea.

And they're not just fitting them to catamarans.

A well respected designer once told me ...

Some draw a boat to sail well
Then design an interior to fit

Others design an interior
Then wrap a boat like shape around it.

Too true! Have you ever noticed on blurbs about super yachts the interior designer is often listed well above the naval architect it the "credits"?

Re: The vibe of it

I am not in the least interested in buying a new boat, but am shocked at the new boat interior designs.

Square corners everywhere.

What were they thinking besides how many they could sell to boating newbs with more money than sense?

Or is that exactly the point? On second thought, I guess I answered my own question...

Re: The vibe of it

The less boat-like they are, the more rich people who don't actually sail buy them.

Re: The vibe of it

This is because they are making $ on the hull while they are making $$ on any extras you want in the boat.

The same story mono or cat.

Re: The vibe of it

A couple of observations since our tri is under contract and we’ve been studying cats, looking for either new or used for our last boat:

All the manufacturers have figured out that the way to sell more vessels in a predominantly male market is by bringing women “on board.” My wife would never use a bucket as a toilet, and given the choice between pumping and pushing a button will choose the latter. Not spoiled - she’s new to sailing and to how traditional boats were laid out. In our 50/60s, electric winches appeal...

Have you bought a truck in the last few years (and women have nothing to do with this!)? I had an F-150 several years ago with which I also towed our Catalina 22 (learning vessel). I didn’t realize until I was test driving it - included in the truck package wasn’t just heated seats, but air conditioned seats. Really??? It also had som new tangled mechanism for hooking up the hitch that I never used. I still lined it up the way I always do with a tennis ball on a rod...

So, not all progress is welcomed by all; I’m sure if I need another truck I can find one without all the fru fru.

Regards,

Re: The vibe of it

New level of ugliness.
Check out the pogostick headroom and lack of bridge deck clearance.
Might as well just have a barge, houseboat and save a pile of cash.
