Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
Team Australia (60ft tri) is busily setting a Sydney to Auckland record as we speak. All going well and seem to be hovering in mid 20s boat speed.

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
It'll be a quick trip.
What is the present record?
Thanks,
Ann

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
Ann - that is the easy bit, there is none, so the whatever they do will be the record, but the nearest to it is probably either Bruce Arms on Big Wave Rider in the trans tasman race that went to Mooloolaba or 6 and a bit days by Ian Johnson on a 40 foot tri in 1986
The reason for the "attempt" is they had to sail over to unzud anyway for a race, so they may as well get stuck in and sail hard and fast. Good practice for the Hobart race later this year.

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
That tracker tech is awesome, I've followed yachts by tracker before and still say it's awsome, like a kid with a new toy. LOL
I find it very interesting and educational to look at the BOM site and toggle between the tracker, the wind and waves windows to see why really experienced sailors pick certain weather windows and what headings/speeds the boat is actually doing.
Better than Fox re-runs, really. LOL

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
So its 2 days to cross the Tasman!
They are just short of the the northern tip of unzud an should probably make it before 48 hours is up. Then they turn south to get down to auckland.

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
Yeah they are going well, but the "turn south" bit involves about 200 miles or so to get from North Cape to the finish in Auckland ..... it ain't over till its over.
Fingers crossed for them and I don't expect any issues, but let's just wait till they finish before we start popping the corks.

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
The tracker 15mins ago has their speed at 3.1knots.
Waiting for the next update.
Should be enough wind there ATM for more than that.

Re: Sydney to Auckland Record setting attempt underway.
It was an older, pre-foiling boat. Makes one wonder how many of the old records will get slashed now by NZ tractors.
What a great adventure it could be to go cruising in such a well sailing boat though!

You would have to be French to go cruising in a boat like that! I recall the 100ft canters were doing it in between 3 and 4 days.

One of many things about the French I like: They stole apple cider recipe from the Anglo-saxons, they modified it with whatever they had at hand, and they came up with champagne ...
And they are not afraid to break their boats either, and breaking things is what gives us progress too.
Cheers,
