Re: Staying fit while cruising

Remove the halliard winches & anchor winch, & if you survive you will be quite fit.

Re: Staying fit while cruising

I'm to fat to swim. I jump off the dock or boat, flail around in the water until someone comes to rescue me. I do this about once a week and I'm good. The ole ticker seems to keep on ticking. I've named it Timex.

You can start by removing all electric winches and your outboard engine. That'll give you plenty of excercise ! And if you really want more, make yourself a pedalled generator, so that you can charge batteries while excercising. Seepicture to get an idea. The person on watch, sitting in the hatch, can pedal. But beware: this is not an efficient generator !

Re: Staying fit while cruising

Edde - it sure sounded to me that the remarks by Kas included a whole lot of suggestions and did NOT sound as self promotion. Presently I am a land cruiser - full time travel trailer. But I was a sailor, although not as extensive as a circumnavigator (dozen passages to Hawaii). I agree with Kaz that there are almost unlimitted opportunities for exercise while cruising, all muscle groups and cardio.

I found this website very informative. Their PDF workouts have pictures, which I like.

I believe that Sir Francis Chichester had a stationary bike on Gipsy MothIV when he circumnavigated.

Re: Staying fit while cruising

Check out some combination or the following: TRX to a soft shackle to the mast or ..., yoga, Thai Chi and vigorous deck raking (with squeegee on a stick). This morning regiment followed with some combination of surfing, diving, paddle boarding, free diving, snorkel, kayaking or biking on shore seems to keep me in shape. On passage the TRX can create great cardio with little weight and small space. I have had stair masters and weight benches on my 56' ketch. They got little use compared to the outdoor activities. Now on a 44' cat with about the same amount of room we have left the bigger items ashore and save that space for beer making, climbing, caving and other gear and an even wider array of water and land toys that double as exercise.

Yes, perfect. These are the types of exercises to combine into a
"pyramid" (see earlier post). Objective : Aerobic Cardio, with some aspect every other objective too.

Get good snorkeling gear and a thin skin suit if necessary to encourage you to go.

Re: Staying fit while cruising

I'm 72 for another week and am a competitive off-road triathlete. Upper body is no problem on a boat as many have said. The reason I bought the catamaran I have is to have room for a treadmill in the companionway. I got a manual one, but they're really finiky to use on a moving platform and blocked the way for everyone else on the boat so I sold it. Powered ones take too much juice. I also have a good self powered bike trainer that mounts in place of the rear wheel. Removed the front wheel and made a bracket to hold the fork. Works great looking out st the sea going by. With a computer interface it can replicate the profile of any GPS track I can find. It replaces half of the big table in the lounge. I even have a Strava activity somewhere between Fiji and New Zealand! Boat speed, of course, but at my age KOM's are hard to get.

I also have a TRX setup. The biggest challenge on a boat is legs and the bike trainer and one legged squats do that. I also have some stretch cords for swimming strength. Many of the other suggestions in this thread depend on good weather, warm water, being in port, etc. I wanted something good for passages. The trainer bike is my good mountain bike for races. There's also a good road bike and two beaters for running around in port, shopping, etc. for my partner and I. You can do a kind of run with the TRX setup, but I save running for land.

To be honest, though I have all the pieces is it a real struggle to be consistent becaus of all the attention the boat requires, though that is improving now that I'm not single handing most of the time. Just do it!!

You're a star sir!
Love the idea... and I am dying to see a picture of it.
This is something I have pictured in my head.

Agree that the legs workout is the main challenge on a boat..

Always good to carry some of those latex exercise bands - different resistance strengths - really helpful if you need to do some specific therapy exercises in a limited space following a strain or injury as well as general exercise. Must agree that rowing the tender should be better than a concept 2 machine!

Here's a pic. Just set it up again after a long period ashore.

Good job. I also have a S-Works but road bike.

A MTB will probably be more useful on land...
