20 years ago a boat of that style would have suited us fine
And 20 years ago we probably still couldn't afford it - would have been a $500k+ boat then.
Now a bit older and cruising full time , large tender and big outboard, walk around king size beds, household refrigeration, washing machine, endless water, essentially all the comforts of a dirt house and the power to run it all without a cord are what we require
To get that and still sail at wind speed or near it will cost an extraordinary amount of coin

Yep
To keep the financier happy, signing off on the coin and out here full time required nice things.
Can't blame her, nice things are well......nice.

20 years ago base price was around $225k, but if still built probably close to $500k now.
No doubt different priorities. I build beach house’s for a living when I’m making a living. We’ve been almost full time liveaboards for over 30 years so when we feel the need for more luxury and amenities it will be a land based beach house for us!

SMJ's TRT1200 was much cheaper then 500k, i nearly got a TRT1200 for 130kEuro in good condition...somebody bought it sight unseen upfront my nose. Was zxactly what i wqs looking for. Didn't know TRT that well at that time otherwise i would have done the same. If i get one in good condition i will also trade my Lavezzi in for it.

Fair enough
We never had nice things in our early years but being frugal did allow us to retire in our 40's
Waited long enough - nice things now.

We’ve been frugal since our 20’s. Semi retired at 30 and been splitting life 50-50 between work and sailing since. Now in my early 60’s I plan on growing up and going back to work full time when I reach retirement age. Maybe ass backwards but has worked for us.

Re: Performance vs Comfort 50-foot Cats - real difference
It’s a Balance 526MkII, that was loaded for the 1300 mile passage we were on, full water tanks & 3/4 full with fuel. Carrying a Highfield 360 with a 25HP 4stroke dinghy, and all the toys & crew of 5. Flying 120sqm code 0 & full main. TWA of 105. Max boat speed this trip was 22.9knots surfing a wave in 22knots of wind at 150 TWA, the boat likes to sit around 14 knots or so very comfortably not in anyway seeming out of control, more so she’s in her element.
The issue is as others have alluded to, it’s not an inexpensive catamaran. There are faster cats out there no doubt l but it’s a pretty decent blend of comfort and performance.

The hull will limit speed no matter the sail configuration.

That kind of sailing is awesome. Our 43' cruising mono several times has done 8kts SOW in 8kts true wind with a TWA of 90 (and AWA about 60) under main and asym. Down wind in 9, we won't see much over 7 (with an AWS of 2 kts--freaky!).
Like I said, awesome!! [emoji16][emoji106]

Thin hulled cats (ones with length to beam ratios of 10-1) don't have a hull speed limitation. Same thing with thin kayaks and rowing shells. Hull speed is for fatter and heavier hulls.
