There is a pretty interesting read on the Torqueedos written by a guy that has a Seawind 1000. Should come up if you google KatieKat Seawind 1000. He is running 1 Yamaha 9.9 and I Torqueedo. He appears to be happy with the Torqueedo but doesn't think It has as much thrust as the 9.9. I think he's still in the trial stage.

We're talking about 320 lbs. gen. plus 390 lbs batts, plus 80 lbs torqueedos, for a total of 790 lets call it 800lbs. You are still going to have, what, two hundred pounds in inverters, lots of heavy cables, battery hold down straps, hardware, connectors, etc. That's a thousand pounds, fixed. Before you add diesel fuel, filters, etc.

the stock outboards weigh 88 lbs each. That's what the boat was designed to sail well with.

I still like it. I just think it probably needs to be installed on a 40 ft. boat, with the current state of technology....('current state' yuk yuk..)

added: I just looked at the aquawatt. did you realize that those weigh 126 lbs each, come in 20" transom height only ( I think the Yammies are longer?) and cost (at today's exchange rate) $ 8,575. each? I'm just saying...
Maybe back to the drawing board for me. If I use the Aquawatt, maybe need to add to the LWL with a couple of sugar scoops?

I'm still going through your blog, but you can save me some time, are you on grid power for your home or are you "rolling your own" in the production of electricity?

Re: PDQ 32 vs Gemini 105MC

We're on the grid. Paying 50 cents a kwh. Power company here will cut you off if you make your own electricity, there's no net metering here. We live on an absolutely perfect spot for solar and wind, and I designed the garage roof specifically for that kind of thing, but we would have to go whole hog and sever relationship with electric company if we did that. I did buy a generator after hurricanes Hanna and Ike hit us in the same week in 08. They do allow home generators in emergencies.

Have been in contact with Windspire and some other vertical axis wind folks, and I think those would be ideal. Until someone gets solar electric right. We do have solar heated hot water, and it's awesome. 50 gallons in the collector, feeding a well insulated 50 gallon electric heater in the attic. After we installed it we went three weeks before we discovered the electric water heater wasn't even hooked up to power. The solar was more than sufficient alone.

I need to find some wind generator people who want a nice, scenic, tropical, ideal house in the trade winds to test their gear.

Power and telephone are all we have out here. No town water, totally cistern with a filtration system. One of the things I would like to do if I could get the power thing worked out is install an RO system. Seawater, we got.

At 0.50 per Kw/hr, I think it is time to roll your own. Good timing, as China has flooded the market and we can buy at retail for $1.03 per watt. That is so much cheaper than the $5+ per watt I paid for my panels.

Re: PDQ 32 vs Gemini 105MC

Byron,

I know you will ask, so I did some light number crunching. Assuming your daily electrical consumption is about 25Kw/hr at $0.50 per, works out to $4,562.00 per year, sound close?

$7000 for panels 7,000 watt array
$5800 for (24) 2 volt, 700 a/hr AGM batteries
$2100 for 48 volt in, 4400 watt inverter (surge to 8500) 120/240 60 cycle (if that is what your home is set up for)
$1500 labor for system install

$16,400 so a 3.6 year pay back not including the batteries will need to be replaced in 12 years. Replacement battery costs $480 per year. So make it a 4 year pay back.
