Outremer 45 Underwing Clearance

Can anyone with actual offshore sailing experiance on an outremer 45 (2003 Danson Design) please help me in regards to hull slap/wave impact. I inspected a 45 today and measured actual underwing clearance which was 550mm. This seemed far lower than what everyone seems to think is acceptable for serious offshore cruising and the boat appeared to be floating on her design waterline. Can anyone enlightment me on this please.

I have always liked the early Outremers.

Are you looking at the Tassy one?

The new ones appear to be very s l o w.

I'm sure someone here knows the history of the design.

The shorter ones went through a transition of extensions. If this one has evolved this way it will be low on clearance. It does look down on its lines with antifoul up to the first transom step. I suspect they were never intended to carry all the gear that this one is equipped with.

An attempt was made from memory to address this issue with the a build weight reduction.

Chris Whites' book is a good read, and covers design aspects such as bridge deck clearance well.

Yep, I’ve seen it. Been down those waves on our Corsair 36 and had moments of uncertainty!

I've had a 42 now for 3 years which was the shorter brother of the 45. Ground clearance is a complicated mix of the vertical clearance and the distance from the bow at which the clearance is measured, and also the bow wave form has to be considered. And then there's the excess weight which is always in place.

The previous generation of Danson boats appeared to me to slam when going upwind and certainly the 40/43 I had was very bumpy although that didn't appear to slow it down. It was just uncomfortable to be a part of. It never created any stress cracks or anything as a result.

The 42 is much less prone to slamming and up wind it is very rare indeed even when loaded. It can occasionally slam downwind but it is rare and usually means you are helming dead downwind in a short sea and not going fast enough. Put up more sail and problem solved.

The 45's have a very good reputation but are usually, as someone has already said, overloaded.

You won't go far wrong.

A family was crossing the Indian ocean this year on a newer 51. They were regularly doing 200nm days. I don't think they are slow.

We have an 03 45 which is based in Grenada .Our cruising has a lot of up wind into between Island chop . Generally it is not an issue but we did a wind against tide situation that gave us a a couple of thumps . I t was a very close reach in 30 knots apparent with 10-14 seas and a 6-8 knot boat speed .we were double reefed for comfort. If the seas are regular it does not happen much if at all. I agree with the earlier post that the location of the lowest point is the most critical. Getting a love tap under the aft end of the saloon is much different to being stopped in your tracks by slamming the front of the bridge deck into a wave . Last season we sailed with another danson 45 that had crossed the Atlantic 5 times . you will enjoy the boat
