Lagoon wrecked in San Blas

[Steel sails]

Nacar a lagoon 410 wrecked yesterday in San Blas items.
Apparently 18 people on board all rescued. My friend cruising down there heard but did not see, that the hulls separated.
Nacar was a charter cat making the Cartergena to Panama run.

I don't recall that place from my time in San Blas. I assume it's eastern as the cat was coming from Carti

I doubt a 410 would fall apart while sailing. Maybe after hitting a large angry whale or a cargo ship.
Or after some modification / repair seriously compromising the hull structure.

more likely one of the 18 passengers suffering from sea sickness and needing some air opened the big hatch near the waterline in the aft cabin

Now that does sound likely. These craft are not designed for use as booze cruise tourist ferries. It is well possible that whoever was the skipper was breaking the law with that many paying passengers.

Pretty common that these kind of boats has
Class A - ocean : 8 People
Class B - C (offshore/coastal): 16-20 people

Yes the report was the hulls separated. The report was from someone shoreside where they were rescued. Not necessarily familiar with sail boats, so we will have to wait for a better report.
The Cartagena to San Blas run can be pretty rough to be considered coastal.
This route is also usually done as a backpacker type transport trip with 3 or 4 days in the San Blas islands so with stores plus luggage plus 18 persons vessel would be pretty loaded.
The charter captain is a regular to the area.

True enough. Also pretty common to find fly by nights… but yes…provided adequate safety kit etc. Website seems to indicate set up for 12, not 17 plus captain. But we'll have to wait for further details. The website does make the operation look professional, above board, and safety conscious though. As to hull separation: that's pretty eyepopping stuff.

IMHO websites can be misleading, particularly when the readers have no idea of what to look for.

If you were to trust those websites you would conclude that Maratonga (vessel recently lost in the North Atlantic after an earlier incident that required tow by USCG) was in good shape. Maratonga was one of the regular boats in the Cartagena-San Blas backpacker business. Someone who was onboard Maratonga did not agree with the description in the website (safe, well equipped, etc).
