Okey, folkies... I got the impulse to start a thread... it shall not become a personally one, instead its open for all Trimaran and multihull lovers (catamarans, proas), for sailors and skippers on such boats, for owners who know about a "big coming together" - in the future or of the past.

Let call this thread: "THE MULTIHULL HAVEN (Heaven)" ! - I got the inspiration by following picture...



E.g. it can be an uniquely or annually...

• multihull meeting... on the water
• multihull (inwater) boat show (not land based boat shows)
• natural multihull havens (where many Trimarans lay on morings not folded in marinas)
• living boat communities (with mainly multihull owners)
• multihull regattas

So you see what the relevant aspect is: The "coming together" of Trimarans and Multihulls in-water and anywhere in this world (trans-continental, internationally) !!

Have fun with to know where many multihullers can meet each other to experience best conditions (by wind and infrastructure (e.g. enough space)).

All the cruising catamarans and trimarans offered for sale – both sail and motor – will be presented afloat. On the nearby quais visitors will find a village entirely dedicated to catamarans, bringing together all useful equipment and services: equipment, electronics, deck and sail fittings, financing solutions, insurance and maritime surveys, not to mention transport, charter, blue-water cruising advice, etc.

You wanna know where this "Multihull Haven" and coming together of so many Trimarans took place ??

Something like 26 boats out of 35 (or so) assembled on a warm, sunny afternoon on the beach at Fort McCree, near Pensacola Florida… (Rec.: The photo was taken by Corsair Marine International in May 2015.)

A temporarily multihull haven (every odd year) in Europe...

IMM is a mixture of a summer-trip and a family-friendly boat meet for multihull sailors. It's held in the end of July every odd year. The event is hosted by the national multihull-federations in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.




The first IMM in 1977 gathered about 25 boats, and has so far had a record-breaking 120 boat’s on Rügen / Germany in 1995.

The participants range from regular cruising boats to hardcore-racers and trailer-boats. The organizers had the pleasure to welcome multihull sailors from Finland, Latvia, Holland, France, Belgium and Great Britain.

From 23rd July 2015 on the Norwegian Multihull Association presented in Halden the first IMM together with SCTS & VFS in Sweden and Danish Multihull Ass. After a while also Multihulls Germany participated as hosts for the IMM.

Some years back I toyed with the idea of creating a marina in San Diego Bay for multihulls. It would use shallow water and vacant land just north of Chula Vista Marina. Slips would be wide enough to accommodate beams up to 24'. Any comments?

Perhaps the first multihull centre of significance, which now has lots of multis of all kinds at anchor, tied to pontoons and on land. You will also find Dazcats in build operated by Darren Newton. Multihull visitors will find lots of enthusiasts as I did a year ago.

Pat Patterson, designer of Heavenly twins, started there while he was in Cornwall while we were building my first cat design, 42 ft. Iconoclast for him with he and his wife working alongside my team - way back.

In fact I am been surprised to see many cats of all sort in Brazil, mainly DIY but a little local production as well ...

Multimar was the name of a company in Brazil producing Kelsall and a few others designs in the early 1970's. A lovely couple, very enthusiastic for multihulls, who became good friends. Names are testing my memory - Ruis I think. Sadly he lost his life in a light aircraft accident and although she continued for a while with a partner that did not last. Boat building is a tough task master. A few owners also build to my plans.

Its a pleasure to know you here, Derek ! Appreciate your design work. I am not that age (having started sailing in the 70th). Looking back already before that time you had some relevant impacts onto multihull sailing.

For all newbees: Toria 42 ft trimaran was Derek's first design in foam sandwich and 1st to win the open offshore race RWYC (Two-Handed Round Britain Race) in 1966.
Toria was Eric Tabarley's introduction to offshore multihull sailing. Kind of symbiosis with synergy effects for both. (Rec.: Eric supported Derek to deliver the boat from Cornwall to the London Boat show.)


But not just looking back, Derek's boats can be of "real future", e.g. twin masts (free standing) as seenon his 54 Foot Catamaran design.

Tks for the tip... yes, UK has a lively multihull scene, indeed. Similarly like I know it in Netherlands (round 400 people there).

Heavenly twins in Multihull Haven Heaven... :-) sounds great !

Yes, that is an important and relevant aspect. To imagine a hot-spot for multihull boaters can set free lots of positive energy, e.g. new upcoming designers, enthusiastic and talented multihull sailors etc. ...

Infrastructure is very relevant and to have a lively atmosphere around by a multihull community living the spirit of these boat (e.g. I remember the global Wharram community).

Since more than 20 years I hear the argument from monohull sailors against catamarans/trimarans:

1. Multihulls are not safe (nose diving, capsizing, lack of self righting)
2. Multihulls dont have space in marinas (manoevring, parking)
3. Multihull boats are too expensive (running costs)

But the reality has changed very slowly. Nowadays the charter fleets of charter agenices have 25% covered by multihull boats.

So clearly we see: an increasing number of sailors love these boats.

Lack of space in marinas had lead to foldable trimarans, e.g. Dragonfly, Farrier have designed already end of the 80th such boats to park in the monohull boxes. But this is not the spirit I like to sail a multihull. I dont like foldable boats.

The harbour masters of marines like to demand double prize for cats, not just calculating the boat length for day rent during summer season... which can make it very costly for boat owners.

So covering all (negataive) aspects with specific multihull havens can turn the experience of multihull sailing into something positve. In my view it makes sense.

Important aspect of a multihull haven:

• the multihull boat owners as commity have a bigger understanding for each other and for the specifically needs of cat and trimaran sailors
• Such a special designed multihull marina shall not let park multihull owners in the most uglierst corners because of low draft of 0.5-0.8 meters as it happens in regular marinas to let park them in brackish water.
• Multihull boaters love moorings... because they have enough space on deck to feel free... no urgent need to park in a box and stay long time in a protected harbour pier.
• Specifically for Trimarans another aspect as sailing away is more easy to start from a mooring boye while manoeverig within a protected harbour can make it difficult, because of the big surface they offer by three hulls (and only having one mashine, very often outborders).
• Such a multihull haven should have a structure of technical suppliers who are specialists for cats and tris. E.g. sail makers, riggers etc. ...

24' feet width is not a lot I would say.... imagine you get a visit from one of the bigger 80 Foot Catamarans, e.g. a Sunreef... it has a beam of 38 ft.


Such bigger multihulls are rare, but they are an attraction in every harbour. Even for multihull sailor, too. Such boats should get the chance to stay for longer in the multihull haven and find an adequate infrastructure (crane, slip etc. ...). An important marketing aspect.

Last aspect: shallow water can be a risk. On hot days it can heat up heavily... the streams are low and it can become muddy skinky (even a good place for mosquitos).

If the wind direction should press the water off coast the boats quickly might loose essentially reserves in a nature harbour (bay). E.g. in Baltic sea which is not a tidal sea area regularly we have rising and falling water of 1/2 meter alone because of wind pressure, e.g. the water is backed up in the bays during onshore wind.

I suppose nowadays it needs an analysis, e.g. how is water quality and the eco system changing by a new multihull haven. Might exist some stringently regulations for environment protection. Sustainability is an important aspect. Too often I see that sailors damage and destroy environment instead protecting it (e.g. using heavy chemicals during boat building procedure).
