Smile Inexpensive Production/Custom Used Cat Recommendations

Hi,
I'm curious to hear folks ideas in terms of what to look for/at, & where, in terms of inexpensive (sub-$75k), quality, used; production, & well designed, home built catamarans.

The boat would need to have reasonable to outstanding sailing performance. Good bridgedeck clearance, & sea keeping qualities. And more than likely be in the mid-30' range, give or take.
Ah, & boats located in North America or close there to, definitely get priority attention, but this isn't an absolutely mandatory requirement.

I have a few designs, makes, & places to look for boats meeting these requirements, but am looking for more input & ideas. AKA pretty much any, & all reasonable suggestions will be both welcome, & entertained.

Thanks in advance

My boat is not for sale, but have a look at my blog. Need to do an update with all the recent outfitting for my winters cruise south.

Nothing will fit all your criteria for $30K. But in the production slow boat category for around 75K you have Catalacs and Prouts. The Geminis are actually slightly faster if not overloaded (they almost always are) but really low bridgedeck clearance. Iroquios has some decent boats also. A MacGregor 36 is a Hobie on steroids but not really a cruiser but they are super fast. People have done coastal cruising in them. I think one went to Hawaii. Customs are way cheaper. There was a Woods 37 on Ebay recently for around 70K and that would be about the best for you. The CSKs appear now and then. There's a few on YW.

Cruising by 1-3 or 4 folks, anywhere & everywhere except the high latitudes. I know better, given multi's strengths & weaknesses, plus what kind of weather one gets in the far north & far south.

You just missed out on a really nice Crowther Spindrift 37' in excellent condition with an asking price of $69,000. There's also an older Apache 41 on sailboatlistings for $75,000.

Trimarans will fit your budget and criteria.

For instance, My Iroquois fits all the requirements except Bridge headroom. If you are over 5' 8" and want to stand up in the bridge deck you will need to hit 37 or more feet. If it is above water you have probably blown your budget.

  • Catalac, for those that wish to avoid slamming
Others to consider
  • Heavenly Twins
  • Prout, although probably a lesser Quest 31/33
  • Gemini
standing room, way overated especially if you can stand in the hulls

Re: Inexpensive Production/Custom Used Cat Recommendations

I saw a Wharram (36' ?) in the past few days that was a project fknish boat for $3000 in TX if I remember correctly. It was posted on either Sailboatstuff yahoo forum or on eBay. Likely not what you're looking for but a capable coastal+ sailer.

All great boats, but they don't reach his performance expectations.

nothing will
he has to learn compromise
he has to learn how these boats got to where they are at, and why

on a limited budget, we dont need 'everything', we need what works

Pretty sure the Crowther Spindrift would have met his performance desires, but would have fallen short in some of the other categories.
