Catamaran Insurance Advice

Hello Everyone,

My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a used Lagoon 380 for the primary purpose of sailing the east coast and Bahamas from November to May. We live in Austin, Texas and plan to keep the boat in Kemah, TX during the summer. I keep hearing and reading stories about the difficulty in getting insurance, particularly on an older boat. We will be able to pay cash for a boat in the 200 to 300k range. We are seeing that appears to get us in a well equipped L380 of the mid-2000 years. Our sailing experience is many years sailing inland lakes. We have all the certs through ASA through Coastal Cruising, including the Catamaran cert. We have chartered from the Moorings a few times.

We are looking for any advice on where to start researching insurance. Our current inland lake boat has been insured by progressive since buying it new in 2005.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can pass on to us.

Re: Catamaran Insurance Advice

Make up a sailing resume. Include your certifications and document all your experience, especially passages and your charters.

Make a hurricane plan. Planning to keep it in Kemah for hurricane season?

Then you need to find a broker.

That's about it. Until you get some quotes you can't know the situation.

Re: Catamaran Insurance Advice

Try Susan waters. She's a broker and lives on a cat.
She's given good advice and good service.

Cheers.

+1 for Susan Waters. She found me a very reasonably priced policy with Windsor-Mount Joy Mutual Insurance.
