Re: Blue Water Cats?

As Four Coconuts suggested, Privilege is the brand that offers the quality you are looking for. Your budget is relatively low but you can get definitely get an old Privilege 36, 37 or 39 in that price range. The 395 or later 37 that had the same hulls as the 395 but a less extended transom would be the best. However, very few of them were made as Privilege had started moving their entry point to longer lengths (they now start at 50ft!) so you might struggle to find one.

Have a look at Prout / Broadblue. Sturdy boats that have been everywhere cats go!
Not the fastest but well built and safe. Depends what you want. Also Privilege as already mentioned.
For light and fast maybe a Shuttleworth or Dazcat if you can find one!

Too bad far more that start through a 360 wind up on the bottom...I guess if you can't see them, it didn't happen?

The cats we saw most, that had crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean, were Prouts. Here are some examples: https://www.yachtworld.co.uk/boats/category/type/Prout

There is not an under forty foot catamaran that has the ultimate stability of a forty foot monohull with a lead keel.
There are plenty that have circumnavigated, Plenty

Re: Blue Water Cats?

Unless your post was written over 10 years ago its simply wrong..

tis true that No cat has the ultimate stability of an older monohull... however, current production monohulls with broad beam and twin helm & rudder design are stable inverted.. therefore they have EXACTLY the same ability to 360 degree roll as a cat...ie none.

Cats will float inverted.. Monohulls dont.

conclusion: Cats are safer in rollover situations than modern monohulls...cos at least they float.

also, length has nothing to do with "blue water" . Plenty of small, and even (to me) stupidly small, boats have crossed oceans and even circumnavigated..

So, how much of a compromise are you willing to make in order to get the advantages of a cat (space, speed, stability, weight of rig)? Keep her out of hurricanes? Conditions that might challenge ultimate stability? You'll have to decide for yourself.

If I was to return to sailing I'd look for the cat you describe (under 40 feet), but I'd stay within a day or two of a port, watch the weather, and stay out of thrunderstorm fronts that may have 100 knot winds unless the sails were furled. That said, there are plenty of trans-oceanic cat skippers on this forum.

I hope you find your dream boat.
You should read the account of the 1994 Queens Birthday Race

Multihull Dynamics, Inc. - News Article

Pay particular note that the three catamarans 38, 40 and 41 ft all remained upright. One the 41footer had to be rammed by a salvage vessel to make it sink. The 38ft cat was recovered with minimal damage and the owners were sufficiently confident to sail here again.

All seven monohulls lost their mast and tragically one sank never to be seen again with all live lost.

This was 25 years ago, multihulls have gone through a huge evolution since then, monohulls not so much.
