About to buy this boat

He mates,
Im about to buy this wharram catamaran https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/darw...ale/1316390435.

I love the design of wharrams and it looks perfect for my needs, but someone know anything about the boat?

I see some videos right now but they were 3-5 years ago, should i take a flight and check it out?

Cheers

Errr unless you want to possibly chuck 47K down the drain then yes fly and look at it!

Before wasting money on a flight though, get a lot more (current) pictures and ask many questions about the boat - If everything seems to your liking then fly out and have a look.

Also before handing over any $$ (even a deposit) ensure that the seller is the owner and check all registrations match up, then Surveyors (Boat, Rig and Engine(s)) If all good then proceed with the purchase or re-negotiate if not so good.

Re: About to buy this boat

Jackiemelni I have surveyed a number of Wharram cats and they all have their issues. Rot is really the biggest issue caused by high humidity and not enough ventilation. I see the age is listed at 2012, is that the actual launch date or was that the last time the Wharram was rebuilt? How olds the rigging, sails and outboard motor.
Cheers

Buy it and load some girls in it and take off.

Don’t mind that it’s made of rotten wood and can’t sail upwind…..

I must admit to knowing little about Wharrams but the advert has so little information that would be needed before I spent hard earned on a flight.

You could easily spend double that again on fixing stuff if you don't get lots more info.

Re: About to buy this boat

it all depends on how you want to use the boat, these cats are the best choice for some adventures (eg. shallow water, beaching, etc) they are also very nice and stable platforms to dive, explore or just live aboard for a time

make sure you know to work with the material she is made of, most boats require repair and maintenance sooner or later

I sailed for a couple of days with a guy in a 21' Tiki. I was surprised how well she sailed.

Formidable boats, have circumnavigated an competed in quite a few Transat Jesters.
Wharram knockers have rarely actually sailed them..

I would definitely check out You Tube channels "Wilding Sailing" and "She Sails Solo" before embarking on any flights.

Re: About to buy this boat

If it is the Tangaroa for sale in north Queensland, be aware that there appears to be an issue with the rig.

The mast is too short, and is raked too far aft.
In some of the pictures, it looks like he's unable to hoist the full main because of the mast height.

I've been a Wharram enthusiast since the early70's, owned a Tane, have sailed on many others. This one looks like he used the Tiki wingsail update, but didn't get a tall enough mast.

Good luck.

Re: About to buy this boat

Cannot judge from a photo,,,¡¡¡¡sure the owner is not stupid enough to have a smaller rig, talk to him first,,, beware of comments from armchair sailors, best of luck,,

Biggest issue is rotten wood
Ask me how I know

Re: About to buy this boat

Hello. Dear friends,
Thank you so much for the comments.
I think ill pass on this boat.
I talked to the guy and its hears like he didnt maintained it well in the past 3 years,
It has not much of facilities for comfy living (no toilet,or plumbing for any water), the rig is small, the front beam is broken, and looks like its not lashed like a wharram suppose to be and all screwed.
And something says to me that i dont want to start in Aus.

Thanks again!!
