Windvane self steering Mottle 33

Hi guys:

I own a Mottle 33 which has a reverse transom and the rudder preturds aft underwater with the same angle as the transom as much as 500mm. It’s also a center cockpit with a steering wheel (worst combinations for a windvane)

I have been researching and came up with 2 options, an offset hydrovane or a sailomat. I contacted sailomat and there are paused and the hydrovane is way overpriced.

Do I have any other solutions?. I would also like try to an avoid an excessive overhanging stainless steel structure to support a normal vertical shaft windvane.

Thanks guys.

Cape Horn?

Because they now seem to draw a lot less power than they used to, many people are installing autopilots instead of windvanes. Fewer pieces to wear, break, or get knocked off by waves. Simpler to connect to steering, and useful in in low-wind situations too.

talk to Peter @ https://www.windpilot.com/
best bet by far: complete package, great function, mounting options for all types of sterns, least obstruction of stern, best after sales service.
We were very happy with it & I did a little vid for Peter

(we have no commercial connection/interest in WP!)

Hi
Fleming wind vane, works independently of your steering and can be used as emergency steering. I m using it on S& S 36 , works great.

Ask on the Mottle Owners page on FB. There are lots of owners in the group and someone will have the info you need

When you described the rudder/transom the SailOMat immediately came to mind. The WindPilot Pacific Plus is another auxiliary rudder vane somewhat similar to the Hydrovane. Have one on my Pearson 35 and steered DDW in moderate conditions to Hawaii without a problem even though relative wind was low. They are not cheap however.

Try a Cape Horn. Not cheap but they make them to fit--and use your existing rudder.

Re: Windvane self steering Mottle 33

The rudder that you describe seems ideally situated for a trim tab self steering system. A tab on the main rudder, perhaps controlled by a canted axis vane coupled to the trim tab via push/pull cables could easily be constructed, and could solve your problems for very little money. Worth a look IMO.

They also hold the course when the wind changes.

Re: Windvane self steering Mottle 33

Windpilot, sailomat, cape horn, Aries, Monitor, Norvane, Navik, Neptune, Hebridian kit, Fleming (no longer), are all options...for a price, typically $4-5000 each (except for kit)...
I have a reverse transom as yours, altho my rudder does not extend out beyond it. I am giving windyselfsteering vane a go....Made by a dude in Estonia. I will take delivery in December, vane is $1750 + $450 shipping, but still less than 1/2 all others...no financial interest in this operation, just hoping his "Rube Goldberg" servo vane works. Made of 316 SS, if memory serves me..
So far only issue is timing...as it takes months from date of order to delivery..Will keep all posted in May, 2022, as to success of this brand. thnks
