Re: Vendee 2020

it seems to me that the foilers might be holding back some....saving their best for the Pacific Ocean...we'll see....once past Cape Horn, a likely winner will emerge....maybe...this race can still be lost or won going back thru' the doldrums...I don't recall whether or not the previous Vendee entrants had access to the windy maps, like they have today....

Come one we had that argument now about 15times.
If you can't get over it, well don't follow this race. Or are you just trolling us?

Sam Davies will start again from Cape Town around Monday. Yes she’s out of the race but she wants to finish her around the world journey.
Now that’s the spirit. What a Lady !

More seriously though, part of their safety out there comes from their speed and this speed cannot be had without carbon.

So it all will depend on which aspect of safety we are discussing, as safety at sea comes from various things.

(Let alone that racing is not about safety, it is about winning).

But they do not get these periods. You know, sustained periods of optimal weather are kind of unsustainable.

BTW what exactly creates these optimum foiling conditions? What AWA, what wind speed, what sea state?

I notice le Roi sails better (tighter) angles, he also sails faster than many others. The boat next to him is also one that he helped optimize. (Now there are I think 3 foilers up ahead, and 3 non foilers chasing them).

I don't know what the optimum conditions are, but I believe a very general term would be a broad reach. The Youtube coverage has mentioned an average speed advantage of 3 knots.

Re: Vendee 2020

[QUOTE=psk125;3294592]M. Moitessier was not interested in racing. He withdrew rather than finish, when he would have easily won. He seems only to have wanted to continue sailing away from his responsibilities like his wife and child at home.

When Bernard Moitessier married Francoise in France she already had 3 children from previous marriage. I don’t see any record of them having children together.
Bernard had a child of his own with the woman he married in Tahiti.

you can't discuss that first Golden Globe race without also bringing up the saga of Donald Crowhurst...the man who bullshitted his way around the globe....well, he didn't make it around the globe, but certainly wanted to make people believe he did....couldn't do that today.......

They get checked by the organizers every 15 minutes, including video and laundry list of issues in the boat. The general public do not get half of the data collected by the race organizers.

I saw the 2 movies on Donald Crowhurst. Interesting stuff - a few years ago the Canadian guy Tony. Bigras who build the tiny catamaran Ms Cindy, he stopped at Cayman Brac and took pictures of what was left of teighmouth electron.

Yes Jim, had been following him since his first book, "Sailing to the Reefs"
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...g_To_The_Reefs
and got to know him in Cabo, before he lost Joshua.

One of my sailing heros and the true definition of a solo sailor barnacles and all!

No money around when I met him.
