Opinion on Melody 34

Hi,
i'm looking for a sailboat to travel and do some crossings, and also to live aboard. Don't intend to buy an expensive sailboat or either an expensive boat to keep. The boat is just for me and my wife, and 2 dogs.

I saw a Jeanneau Melody 34 for a good price, and looking well care, and full equiped for crossings. Of course if i intend to buy, i will hire a professional survey.

The comfort, capsize, etc ratios look great, seams to be a good solid sailboat.
But if possible i would like a owners opinion, or someone that already sailed on this kind of boat.

You didn't waste any time, did you, Jorge!

Here's a British review in Practical Boat Owner that gives an overview of 1970's boats and their designs. If you scroll waaaay down, it does eventually provide specific (positive) points on the Melody 34.

And yes - get a survey!

Re: Opinion on Melody 34

It's great to find a review, it wasn't by a owner, but very good review.
The boat is robust, and it shows up in his numbers, but the stern is a bit cramped, so to live a board, that would be too much compromisse.

Re: Opinion on Melody 34

I am a 20-year owner of a Melody. Very sea kindly, huge bilge(s), lots of space in cockpit, lots of space in main cabin. Core boat quality very good, very stiff, interior finish mostly rubbish, but main mahogany panelling still perfect where not exposed to sun and water. Important to remove back rests/top bunks in main cabin. Mainsail controls on mast, so lazy jacks useful to reduce the overall time and effort. Main berth too small for two people taller than 1.75m.

Thanks for your reply. I do love the boat, but the V-berth a bit small for 2 people.
I do have 1.75m ahah right on spot.
After reading the article and your personal review, i think the melody is not the right boat for me.
Thanks for your honest review.
