Re: opinion needed

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Jerry.

None of those 3 have full keel.
Don't get sucked into the mystique.

Re: opinion needed

Do you know how to sail?
Do you know what characteristics you like?
Have you been aboard enough boats to know what “feel” you’re looking for?

Re: opinion needed

You don't need an opinion, you need a boat, and some experience. Why not start with a fun little trailer sailer, like a Catalina 22? It will teach you if you like sailing, if it is a compatible sport. Then, when you sell it to get a bigger boat, you will by then have developed your own opinion of what you prefer for the next boat. Keep the initial investment low, sailboats are always depreciating, not assets. This will also limit your losses if you don't like being cold, wet and scared.

You can even trailer it to the sea for longer vacations. It will help you to see if this is right for you at this time of your life.

Re: opinion needed

I guess a bit of back ground is needed , I have spent most of my life on the water In the north Atlantic , Marine construction , Power boats from 19 to 36 feet , have sailed a Morgan several times back in the early seventies, but this will be my first purchase. back injury's along the way will dictate at least a 30 footer for comfort to start off with. will consider 40 to 45 later on if still actively involved. The years ahead on the lake in the heart of Texas will hopefully hone my skills . Really looking for opinions on the vessels readily available in this area to chose from. Catalina , Pearson , And hunter seem to be the most common finds in my area. Thanks Jerry

Re: opinion needed

They’re all good enough. Especially if you like the boat.

Re: opinion needed

We chose a Beneteau in that size range. Shoal keel lets us sail in the bays (<5’).
In-mast main furling is great for us, as it allows us to keep large Bimini up for shade from Texas sun. (Flaking the main would be a challenge with the Bimini.)

Previously had a full keel Pearson with traditional/standard sails, but no Bimini.

Everything is a trade off, you have to figure out which features are most important to you.

leaning towards a hunter 33, its immaculate owner returns in three weeks will have survey done then . I do understand I'm dealing with much more advanced sailors on this site and appreciate your time. Thanks Jerry
