Understanding, Goes lower, more uncomfortable. Any particular index? Using displacement, LWL, LOA and beam to figure out the #. Does this mean of stability? How people feel differences? Any good examples? I understand depends on person how feels.

I used to have a 39' boat with 230 comfort index. Now I have a 43' boat with a 165 index.

I didn't notice any difference!!!

In general a heavy boat should be more "comfortable" than a light one for the same length. But other than there are so many other factors that IMO it is a waste of time to make motion comfortable a main focus of a boat decision.

# can't be changed since all fixed. But if a motion comfort(feel by person) related a stability, can be changed by loading which could change a CG and CB to improve a bit?

From Ted Brewer's web site:

"COMFORT RATIO (CR): This is a ratio that I dreamed up, tongue-in-cheek, as a measure of motion comfort but it has been widely accepted and, indeed, does provide a reasonable comparison between yachts of similar type. It is based on the fact that the faster the motion the more upsetting it is to the average person. Given a wave of X height, the speed of the upward motion depends on the displacement of the yacht and the amount of waterline area that is acted upon. Greater displacement, or lesser WL area, gives a slower motion and more comfort for any given sea state.

Beam does enter into it as as wider beam increases stability, increases WL area, and generates a faster reaction. The formula takes into account the displacement, the WL area, and adds a beam factor. The intention is to provide a means to compare the motion comfort of vessels of similar type and size, not to compare that of a Lightning class sloop with that of a husky 50 foot ketch.

The CR is : Displacement in pounds/ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x B1.333). Ratios will vary from 5.0 for a light daysailer to the high 60s for a super heavy vessel, such as a Colin Archer ketch. Moderate and successful ocean cruisers, such as the Valiant 40 and Whitby 42, will fall into the low-middle 30s range.

Do consider, though, that a sailing yacht heeled by a good breeze will have a much steadier motion than one bobbing up and down in light airs on left over swells from yesterday's blow; also that the typical summertime coastal cruiser will rarely encounter the wind and seas that an ocean going yacht will meet. Nor will one human stomach keep down what another stomach will handle with relish, or with mustard and pickles for that matter! It is all relative."

Raw numbers tell only a partial tale, and sometimes they outright lie. You've got to get on a boat to feel the difference. But here's a fun website/database that allows you to compare raw numbers of a large number of boats, including motion comfort. Hours of fun...

My previous boat comes in at a 30, which is kinda mid-range. My current boat scores a 45. I can definitely feel the difference in a bump and choppy seaway, or at anchor/mooring when it's blowin' and bumping hard.

Yup ... get a bigger boat

In general, the bigger the boat, the easier the motion. But other factors such as hull design, weight location and sail plan also affect things. In addition, certain boats can do better in different wave forms compared to others. My boat is very comfortable most of the time, but if I get into a waveform that is just steep enough and short enough, she can wallow like a drunken pig.

For any specific boat the best you can do is keep the weight centred, and don't overload it. Lighter boats are most susceptible to these factors.

Mine has a very low # but comfortable most of time for costal, but wanna go further in future.

Like Mike said, keep the weight out of the ends if possible. I've also heard too much weight down low can increase the speed of the righting moment which can increase discomfort. And of course you always need to try and avoid "synchronisation" between the vessel and the sea state whereby a resonance sets up that can cause the vessel to start excessively pitching or rolling. This occurs with any vessel and can only be reduced by either a speed or course change. I'd probably also say sail plan can also be used to improve motion comfort in varying conditions, too.

Weight and displacement play a major role, and their distribution counts heap.

Many of us may find:

- cats give best motion at anchor and very decent motion at sea,
- big boats tend to be more comfortable than small ones,
- classic lines roll, flat beamy boats roll less,
- some classic lines can slam upwind less than some beamy flat ones.

Other than that there is hardly anything fixed.

So you basically want a big boat and preferably a cat and that's how you get most comfort.

Off the wind flat and beamy works very well. Upwind narrow and deep works very well too.

And of course you always need to try and avoid "synchronisation" between the vessel and the sea state whereby a resonance sets up that can cause the vessel to start excessively pitching or rolling. This occurs with any vessel and can only be reduced by either a speed or course change. I'd probably also say sail plan can also be used to improve motion comfort in varying conditions, too.

My boat has light displacement, has speed, compromising some comfort.
