J-Boats or J-28 ?

HELP !!!

A friend is considering the purchase of a 1986 J-28 (“Athem”).
http://www.hoopersyachts.com/index.c...usedboatid=503

I.m not a big fan of J-Boats, but then I’ve only worked on a couple of larger J’s, and never sailed one - so I’m not nearly expert.

The purchaser is intending the boat for club-racing, coastal cruising (2 adults + 2 children - Lake Superior), and single-handed sailing.

I’d much appreciate any information and/or opinions on J-Boats in general, and/or the J-28 in particular.

Thanks in advance,
Gord May

Gord, I am sorry that you are not a big fan of J-Boats, we owned a J/30 for 9 years, and it was great boat. I think your friend might want to consider the J/30 instead of the 28 - there are a number of J/.30's around (teh 28's are rare), thre is an active class association, and they are bigger, faster, and less money that the 28.

The biggest dfown-side to the older J/Boats is the cored hull and deck (they are in good company here). But, if you can find a good one, then it is just a matter of maintenance to keep it dry.

Something to consider.
