Fixer-Uppers & Other Miscellaneous Deals

I thought I was going to open the link to find a fractional ownership offer for this one, but NO!:

2007 Shannon 38 Ketch sailboat for sale in Florida

It's located in "Bahamas, Florida", so if you're in the area....it might be worth a serious look.

Guess that is the "high water mark" of the flooding. If was t already in love with my Tartan, I'd be looking harder

These boats NEVER come on the market this cheap. As shown by that one photo it could have sat on the bottom for a while. If I was shopping I'd want to have a look. I have a similar model. Would be happy to answer questions.

Re: Fixer-Uppers & Other Miscellaneous Deals

he developed a leak when the supply tube fitting on the dripless stuffing box failed and took on water above the floorboard, but below any point of water intrusion in the engine. An insurance claim was made, damage survey prepared, and all repairs competed except for refinishing the interior joinerwork near the cabin sole. See photos showing the water damage on the full specs.

That being the case it still does not explain the price. Maybe he got a good insurance settlement and just wants to move on? Like I said before these boats don't sell for that price.

Re: Fixer-Uppers & Other Miscellaneous Deals

Just did a quick search. All other Shannon 38's are 92000 and up. exactly where they have been for the past +/- 8years. Obviously this boat need s some love, but if I was in the market for a boat that could take me anywhere I'd be having a look at this one.

Doesn't matter the made, it is a 1979 boat that has been flooded! If the insurance really paid out and "repairs" were made the wood would have been refinished!

Re: Fixer-Uppers & Other Miscellaneous Deals

The web site says repairs were made except for the wood refinishing. I own a similar vintage Shannon. She's closed up for the winter so I'm just picturing where that waterline would fall. It would probably be into the engine oil pan and transmission, but probably not into any of the electronics. Over the top of the fuel tanks, but not the water. Other than that, some flooded lockers that drain into the bilge. All the wood components are made to disassemble and be removed for whatever work would be needed to refinish them. Since purchasing my boat 8 years ago I have touched every square inch of her. I see no reason why that water intrusion would be fatal to this boat.I know from experience the boat will take a serious beating from the sea and keep her crew safe. Even if you put a new engine in I think you are getting a hell of a boat for the money.

That's because they've been for sale for 8 years.

Haha Good one! They do stay on the market for a while, but they sell. The people that own them know what they have a won't be beaten up on the price because the buyer says he can get 10 more feet if he buys XYZ boat.My boat was built in 1977 for a price of+/-67000. I bought it 30 years later for 95,000. True I've made many updates to electronics, sails etc but the boat is still worth 95K. 10 years from now it will still be worth that.

8 years of moorage, maintainence and insurance, and inflation makes it a bit less sensible to hang on. I'd rather money up front, savings to another boat owner instead of Marina, west marine and insurance company.

Re: Fixer-Uppers & Other Miscellaneous Deals

The insurance survey should tell all. If someone is a serious buyer, the answers all seem to be available. The ad explicitly states that the engine was not flooded. Insurance documentation should validate that, and a survey with an engine check will double-validate it.
