1978 Fred Amor 40

Anyone out there familiar with 40 foot Fred Amor boats?

I have an Amor 40 which I have owned since 1994. We sailed from Victoria to Opua NZ in 1996 then on to OZ in 1997 and to SE Asia in 2002 where the vessel is currently moored.

What in particular would you like to know?

I would like to know if the hull is cored or solid glass and what the deck core material is. Any thing you can tell me from your personal experience would be appreciated. The reason I ask is my brother is looking at a 1978 project boat and the price is quite low so he wants to know if the hull and deck are built soundly enough to justify restoring the boat

Do you know the name of the boat or the original owner's name?
The boats were custom finished but all the hulls were solid glass - very solid! Some hulls were insulated as well.

The early decks were all solid glass - the flush decks were cored with plywood and all the trunk cabins were cored with 1" balsa core.
The cost of building the hull and deck at today's material and labor prices would be about $60,000.00
A completely finished cruiser would cost about $400,000.00
The glassing workmanship and materials are both top quality. I used isothalic resin on every boat we built.

The only Amor 40 not built by me has a vertical trailing edge on the keel and was built by Joseph Corria (yacht designer). He modified it to be a purely racing experiment - so it was built much lighter making it a much less desirable rebuild option.

My goal was to build a safe offshore boat and most of my customers did indeed take their boats offshore and some of the original owners still have their boat today!

Hello Fred good to hear from you. I think the original name was Buccaneer three. I believe it went through one owner before my brother and I acquired her. It is set up as a centre cockpit of sorts and my brother is currently doing all the work as all I am able to contribute at this point is money and encouragement. I followed the journey of the sistership that did the nothwest passage recently. A good testament to the quality of the build don't you think? We are considering rigging it as a cutter but don't know if this is feasible. If there is anything we should know about he boat we would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi Perchance
Does the boat have a hard top dodger on the center cockpit?
If yes then I believe it was a boat hull and deck kit that I built for Lionel Forge.
He worked for me for a while, was a good glasser and he added the dodger.
I seem to remember that it was probably set up to be rigged as a sloop - in that case the mast position would be 16' aft of the bow. Some were rigged as cutters and the mast in that case was about 18' at of the bow.
I did a search and found a photo of the boat marked as sold at:

This photo was taken behind the complex where I had my shop and where it was built.
You can rig it as a cutter but you would have to change the mast position which I personally would not bother to do since it sails so well as a sloop.
All the off shore passage making Amor 40's were sloop rigged.
Al Land made a passage from Hawaii to Victoria in 17 days single handed.
Mike Kazonski made a trip from Winter Harbour on northern west side of Vancouver Is. to Richmond in 24 hours (motoring at 10 knots average) in his Amor 40.

There's one for sale in SE Asia at present (or it was for sale recently). It's a good looking boat, particularly if you wanted to use it in the higher lattitudes.

Can you tell me anything about a Mapleleaf 43 you build. one is for sale in San Diego and i'm interested in a few details of the design and hull. Was this originally a Maple leaf 42 hull?

I'm sorry to hear about Fred. I'd really like to hear more about this boat and in particular its sailing performance.

I wonder if Amor Marine built the Maple leaf boats? I see a 41' (35' LOA) pilot house designed cutter with a most interesting layout. Would that be something you might biult or know about Fred?
