1967 Pearson Vanguard

Can anyone give me a pros and cons list for the 1967 pearson vanguard?

I have visited the internet and cruising forums as well as pearson vanguard at pearsonvanguard.org,

which has been really helpful.

What I am looking for is more along the lines of seaworthiness, as well as the ability to be sailed in blue (and possibly green, you never know) water and if anyone has any suggestions on upgrades or improvements.

Overall:
- No blisters/osmosis
- pettit unepoxy bottom paint 2008, going to repaint next month.
- new standing rigging
- diesel engine, atomic gas engine has been removed
- putting in new running rigging.
- self-steering vane
- deck is being sanded and repainted

So, pros and cons as well as suggesting upgrades or improvements.

Solid bullet proof thick hull of the 60s. Can sail to weather fairly well. Not great down wind. Good choice for a cruiser on a limited budget. Can handle a crew of 2 comfortably.

Pro's and cons are a bit subjective. The Vanguard is a heavy long keeled boat. Is that a pro or a con? For blue water its probably a pro.

You should check its capsize ratio and angle of vanishing stability. I'm pretty sure this is a boat that is sure to right herself after a knockdown or capsize. Pro.

Initially tender like most boats of the era but they don't bounce around. Pro?

Short waterline for a 32' boat. Con? Less interior room as a result too.

Deck's often need re-coring (balsa & age). Ok, definitely a Con.

Not a fast light wind boat.. but that's not what you're looking for right?

Most the Vanguard owners I've talked to prefer the tiller version.

I think it would be really rare to find osmosis on these boats as their fiberglass was thick and generously resin'd.

The 'American Beauty' article was informative and helpful. I too have been looking at the Pearson Vanguard while considering a first boat.

If I was inclined to do so in a fiberglass hull boat, the Vanguard would definitely be on my short list.. although I might want something a little bigger.. maybe an Alberg 35. Of course ANY boat getting ready for offshore work needs to be checked out carefully.. especially the standing and running rigging. What I consider "safe" on my coastal cruiser could be death-trap for offshore work.
