Re: You might be "Boaty" if…

You consider golf to be inexpensive.

Visitors ask "how much do boats cost?" I respond: "think of each one of these in the marina as a Porsche or Ferrari."

You feel bad for those people hiking the shoreline looking out.

The lawn can be mowed next week. Next week. Next week.

The thought of hanging out by a swimming pool sends chills up your spine. You look at a pool and think how great it would be with rocks and fish.

You select beer brands based on which taste OK when warm.

You should buy stock in the company that makes those little propane bottles.

You can emulate the local NOAA weather station "This is KHA53 operating at a frequency of 162.40 megahertz. Local weather factors for..."

You cite distances in nautical miles, even on land.

Your new sail is worth more than your auto.

You may not have beer in the fridge at home, but sure as heck have beer on ice on the boat.

ICW is I-95 for interesting people.

You show disdain for the fish in the super market "I ain't gonna eat that junk!"

BVI is to your family what Disney is to your kids' friends families.

Having survived yet another dangerous storm, you are amazed by the drama created by land people over life's little things.

TVs belong in lounge rooms and hotels, not boats.

You're not SCUBA certified but have a wet suit and snorkel gear.

Your bikes collapse. And that's a good thing.

You lock the house on the way out, maybe have an alarm system, but you can leave the boat wide open. You fully expect that if a neighbor needs something they'll go aboard and help themselves.

Your method of inter-spot transport is the inflatable. It doesn't occur to you to use the auto.

OMG so true! Had a colleague (open office) who did it all the time, and never realized that
- people who don't use phonetics had no idea what he was talking about;
- people who use standard phonetics had no idea what he was talking about.

Oops, am I reacting like a "Boatie" - or maybe like a radio operator ...?

Oh My God - this had me crying from laughter and sadness at my desk. It's cold and spitting rain up here in the Great Lakes, and all our boats are out of the water. I miss sailing so much!

A true boatie can answer this:

What is your speed in minutes per minute if you're travelling at 100 kph?

You might be a boatie if

Every time you have to drill a hole or turn a screw at your land home you have to get tools from your boat.

a) You can instantly do a mental conversion of feet, fathoms and meters and
b) You know what a fathom is.

Do you get extra points for knowing leagues?

When you make a purse, it is out of Sunbrella remnants, the zip from a sailmaker's dumpster, which decides the size of the opening for you, and when done, it will hold six Pacificos.

Cheers, SD,

A.

The true boatie also realizes the answer depends upon direction of travel!

Depending on what "minute" you are talking about.

Minute of Latitude used in chart work is a constant.

Your speed if traveling north or south would be 1.4 minutes per minute at a rate of 100 knots per hour speed.

That's not boating, that's racing handicaps.

Anyone besides me know how much a "shot" (of chain) is? Tales of a misspent youth, aka things learned at 15 But hey, I could drive a stick at 13.
