Re: You Don't Have to Be Rich to Go Cruising !

Modern technoligy is certainly making things easier, we are boat hunting right now, and will broadcast from the boat (as we travel) a regular radio show to the spanish mainland, Gibraltar and the canary Islands, that we currently do from a studio!

The driver was completely wrong in her assumption. Her house and cab were probably worth more than our sailing home and her income was probably well above ours.

You are also completely wrong in your assumption. I have met both rich and poor people sailing boats everywhere and I know there is place for everybody. Much more so in the ocean than on land.

Re: You Don't Have to Be Rich to Go Cruising !

Fernao,

Unfortunately, none of us speaks Patois. I do speak French, but that's very different. Our boat name "Irie" is indeed a Jamaican word (meaning "It's all good!"), suggested to us by a very liberal family member. We both love reggae (you'd be surprised how many songs actually have the word "irie" in there somewhere) and we like the relaxed expression. In regards to your boat buying or boat building... How many years (decades) do you want to wait and dream -and get frustrated- before you go sailing? :-)

Cormorant,

We are "getting there"... We almost manage to get " a wash" every year: enough to come in... to go out, but right now we're still a bit in the "negative". It means we do work a lot and don't get to enjoy our surroundings and destinations as much as the "rich" people with dividends or the retirees, but I'm sure those people have worked very hard in the past and now they get to enjoy the fruits of it. To work and sail is very feasible. You just have to find the right "niche" and be OK to work, while the neighbors are not. And, you have to be determined to take Sunday off and actually enjoy where you are once in a while! The Caribbean office remains more attractive than the cold weather one. It is just a very busy schedule, all other things (boat maintenance, daily chores, sailing from A to B, social gatherings in the evening) considered. But, it's still fun! :-)

Liesbet:

C'est bien.... (Aussi je parle francais..)

You are right... Irie is a Patois wordytin meaning cool. It's usually used with the phrase, "evryting irie".

When I get out of debt and save to buy or build my boat... I look to live the life that you and your family do. going from place to place on my own sailing yacht..

I thougth Liesbet was supposed to be spelled "Lisbeth". Perhaps you are an undercover from the Government wanting to find out what Cruisers are up to.

Suspicously yours

Re: You Don't Have to Be Rich to Go Cruising !

20,000.00 a year isn't that much money. That's less than my house payments were for a beat to death small 3 bedroom in Central California. It's about what 2 people on SSI get if they get $800.00 a month each.
20,000.00 a year in the US isn't rich.

You picked my old home town for your example!
And those cab drivers are smart... the greater the flattery the greater the tip, usually...

And you're right about perceptions... I used to sit in Point Yacht Club and look at the boats in the visitor berths (don't know if they still have them).
I thought even the scruffy ones must have some wealth somewhere to live this life.

You got the point!

Liesbet is a Belgian name of which there is one other version: Liesbeth, which is how most of them are spelled. No undercover. And, definitely NOT for the US Government. Homeland Security is not my friend. That'll be a big article in the make one day.
