Why do Vee Berths Exist?

If you're bouncing around you anchored in the wrong spot! ....but being in the V... you can hear and tell when It's time to move before the bow roller parts company with the boat... or when you hear that chain dragging across the bottom due to the windshift.....

The V berth in my Newport 27 lets me stretch all the way out. I'm 6,1 and when I'm a bad skipper this is where I sleep until my wife lets me come home

My girl and I sleep quite well in ours. But yes takes a spell to untangle our feet in the am. During the day we keep our sailing bags and hatch to c- way in there. It's actually comfortable as long as we have good air and not raining.

Wy would I put the anchor out if I am underway? Crew bunks up there on a passage the few times I've had crew. I tried it once it was pretty exciting.

I claimed the v-berth on our boat. It's cozy and the glass is an inch thick! Very reassuring.

Our Mac 25 was quite cramped when we first got it. So, We knocked out the head walls and extended it by 20" now it's great. We have done 12 day/night stays on it and been quite ok.

For what it is worth:

Sleeping in a V-Berth was awesome comfortable when I slept in a Pearson 50+ and a Dufour Gib'Sea 50 and an IP32. It was big and comfortable for me to sleep alone and/or with my wife- no problem.
I have never slept in a V-Berth is a smaller boat but this week I will be on a IP27 and I will choose to sleep in the salon/bed and let my young son sleep in the V-berth.
I have limited experience except to say that on a bigger boat the v-berth was super comfortable to sleep at anchor or marina for one or two-
I don't know what they are like on a smaller boat but will find out this week and let you know-

Well when I got my boat I premised how terrible having to go to the boat every weekend for maintenance was, oh and that if I sailed her every weekend she would cost less in the long run. So I think it's a win win around here.

We are abnormal in that regard as we've found ours far more comfortable with our heads toward the bow. We never sleep there while underway but my children are known to.
