Wet suit, weight belt, fins and goggles. Part of the tool list on a cruising boat. Most of us have been there. Went through what looked like seaweed once, it turned out to be a thick polypropylene line with seaweed growing on it.

You don't need a diver. Sometimes if you get about thirty people on the bow the prop will come out of the water and you can get at it from your dink.

It doesn't usually take long to cut stuff loose. Figuring out how it's wrapped and which way to work it loose takes the most time. Then it's cut but not you. Getting the bow down is a great idea. Calm water is best. If you can find the end put a tag line on it. One person pulls while another hand cranks the shaft in reverse. Okay unless it's double backed and really fowl. Check that the shaft hasn't slipped in the coupler. Good luck.

We had a dingy painter get caught around the prop of a boat sailing with us-- the DH dove under and cut it away....of course we were in the BVI. The only funny thing was his head ended up blue on to from rubbing the bottom paint!
Suggest you get a wet suit and fins....this could happen again and we often have to dive under to scrape bottom or check on things anyway. Certainly not a waste of money if you plan on cruising.

Buy a wetsuit and get in the water. Think of it as practice because it will happen again.

I took my kids cruising in November once. Had just splashed in the yard, but forgot to put the cotter pin through the shaft. The water was high forties and it was dark and muddy, had to feel it in there. Every time I came up for air the kids would cheer me on.

I own a wet suit now, and use it a lot. I don't pay people to swim under my boat, although they provide an important service to many. Instead of paying a diver, see if you can get a suit. You will use it, and save money for a diver over time.

This is a good point to consider when heading offshore. Little stuff like this will shut the boat down. If you are offshore Hatteras, with impending weather, and you foul the prop, what do you do? It's often the little stuff that starts the cascade, not rogue containers or whales like we read about.

Careful with the cold water, and WEAR GLOVES while working down there always. Barnacles will tear you up, and the infections can be serious. You will get comfortable under the boat after a few dives. Without a weight belt you will work very hard to stay down. You'll be surprised how exhausting it can be to do these jobs underwater, or just getting the wetsuit on and off

A lot of good long-term advice here, but Scoobert is apparently floating (presumably anchored) in shallow Barnegat Bay with no engine power and not within walking distance of a Walmart.

I've freed a prop, too, but in Ft. Myers in the summertime, and it was still, as cheoah says, exhausting.

Don't kill yourself, Scoobert. This may be the time to call Sea Tow.

This is it, Scoob. If you can't clear your own prop, you shouldn't be out there. So, show us all that you are capable of solving this common problem.

Get warm water and hot water bottles ready for your exit from the water, put your mask on, tie your knife to your wrist, HTFU and then DO IT!

If no mask is available I myself would go the SeaTow and nearest haul out yard route as that is an towing option. If a yard has a haul out it may have a diver or you can catch a cab to get a wetsuite. Do you have a knife with a lanyard?

Sea Tow should be a source to get a diver. If not, I would bet a call to a local West Marine would find a name. Don't try it yourself without the right equipment.

I have never used a mask. This is more about feel and even more about how friggin cold it is. I think I would be shoving hot water bottles into my wet suit. Try calling some NJ dive shops. New Jersey Scuba Diving Shops here is a list of some.

Well the diver called me late last night, he will be here tomorrow.

A few notes.
I am docked.
I have 0 scuba training. Thou i will most likely get my training this winter.
I have a mask and snorkle, no diver flag. I will not go under a moving boat with a current when i am untrained.
We called seatow, who called the coastguard to tow us in... Lol
Tomorrow we should be sailing again.
