Both very interesting efforts at circumnavigating!

Every race that allows the use of the engine even on emergency is not worth it .
But that's just personal opinion.

Re: Solo, non-stop circumnavigation

What you note in both the low tech and the high tech circumnavigations is the very high chance of failure. For Stanley Paris, it was his technology (and his absolute reliance on technology) that failed him. For the low tech boats, it was something more drastic that led to the failure, like rolling the boat. I am a very strong believer that a boat should be able to return safely to port with absolutely no electric power or technology.

A fellow once started off across the Pacific with an autopilot. But when it failed in the first few days, he continued on to the South Pacific Islands using nothing more than the bungee cord method of self steering described in my singlehanded tips book. To me, that is the epitome of sailing skill!

Re: Solo, non-stop circumnavigation

The two ‘stories/attempts’ are simply an interesting juxtaposition of very different ‘ways’ to circumnavigate...

Very interesting...
